Exploring Ossex

Ossex is a fairly big town, and there are a lot of things to do here, especially if you know where to go. Start off by going back to Radiant Manor first, to the courtyard. In the square area where you fought Thorne, you should see a new NPC, named Lena. Speak to them to see they count how many tiles you can jump right in front of them. There is a trophy/achievement related to jumping all 10 tiles without touching the ground, but you won’t be able to do that right now, so ignore Lena. Head to the upper right of the courtyard and destroy the hedges there, allowing you to enter a new screen to the right.

There is a NPC named Elizabeth here and if you choose the Nice Skull… option, she will give you some Bones, as long as you pay her back later. Take her up on the offer, since the 250 Bones can help you out greatly right now. There’s nothing else outside, so enter the manor now. You can interact with the large mirror in front of you, but other than making some funny faces, it’s largely unimportant. Since your last visit a few moments ago, the room on the right is now open, so go in there. There is an item on top of the bookshelf, as well as a chest, but seemingly no way to get to them. Towards the left side, although it’s hard to see, there is a spot you can smack with your weapon to reveal a ladder.

(1 of 3) You can exit to the right at this spot after trimming the bushes.

You can examine the book, but it does nothing, so burrow jump to the chest to find it contains a Bonestone Gem. Back in the main foyer, you can also go upstairs in the manor, but there’s nothing up there other than some Bones in Lionel’s office. So, you can the manor and courtyard altogether and head to the City Center.

Ossex - City Center

As soon as you exit the manor area, you should see two kids kicking a can around. Speak to the one in green to see them challenging you to kick the can below the bridge to the south. While it can be a bit annoying to do, since your weapon is tied to the same button as speaking to NPCs, it should be relatively easy to do. Completing this small task will reward you with the Trash Juggler trophy/achievement. To the left of the kids, in the same area, will be a door you can enter, so do that. You should see a chest in the bottom right corner, so go to the second floor and burrow to the drop-off point on that side. The speed will allow you to reach the chest, which contains a Bonestone Gem.

Back outside, speak to the NPC by the little stand near the kids to be able to read a newspaper. These pretty much help guide you on what to do next, so check them after main story progression. South of the fountain will be some shops, although it’s possible that you may not have the Bones to afford anything, but it’s good to take a look. The red one on the left is the blacksmith, Legovich’s Arms, where you can get upgrades for your weapon, as well as purchase new weapons to use. Remember this for later, since each one costs 2,000 Bones, so they are highly likely out of reach right now.

(1 of 4) Hit the can the kids are playing with below the bridge to unlock a Feat.

The building with the flower decoration is the Emporium, where you can purchase upgrades for Mina. This includes things like health, Plasma Vials, Spark Containers, Joule Boxes, and Trinket Bags. Some might be enticing, but some of your first items you get should either be the Plasma Vial increase, or the Spark Container. The other shop to the right of the Emporium sells some Kears, which can be important as you explore other areas. They only sell nine of them, though, and each one will be more expensive than the previous one. It probably wouldn’t hurt to pick up at least one of them.

Just south of the Kear shop is a wooden box along the right wall, so break it to find a path you can take. This will lead to the front of the large building there, but before entering, destroy the blockage to the left of the entrance so you don’t have to take the path anymore. This is the Hollower’s Guild, which might not seem important right now, but it comes in handy a little later. Burrow to the second room to the north to find a chest that has a Kear in it. Speak to the NPC here to learn about someone named Rhene, who’s been taken by Thorne’s forces, as well as that Drillhardt is missing. You’ll be doing the sidequest related to them in a little bit.

(1 of 7) You can find some boxes to break at this spot, allowing you to reach the entrance of this building.

The last building in the southwest corner cannot be entered in your current state, as you need two Sparks to do so. Should you have purchased the extra one at the shop, the door will open. It doesn’t seem like there’s anything to do here, but you can destroy the wall in the back, allowing you to reach the ledge just north of the house. Destroy the blockade, then grab the Iron Steed Sidearm. The hole right next to you is a small area where you can use the Iron Steed to get an item. The goal here is to hit the button you see to cause a Bonestone Gem to appear in the sludge along the bottom. As soon as you press the button, don the Iron Steed and begin moving right. It might take a few tries to get it right, but reaching the end before the gem allows you to grab it.

Ossex - High Street

This area is to the right of City Center, and will be the next stop on our little journey. First and foremost, if you see a lady running around that has some sparkles coming off of her, speak to the lady to get some Bones from her. You can do this up to three times, although you have to exit and re-enter the area to get that to reset. You will see a shop here towards the bottom, although it requires two Sparks to open it. This is the Atelier, which sells Cloaks. The only one available right now is very expensive (3,000 Bones), but don’t leave just yet. There is a hidden hole in the bottom right you can burrow under, leading to a small room with a chest across a big gap.

If you have the Iron Steed, you can easily make it across and hit the chest, revealing a Bonestone Gem. Returning to where you entered the area, go inside the building there and talk to the NPCs to see them mention the mirror. You can’t reach it right now, but you can go to the attic via the stairs on the right, although you can’t do anything from this side. Back in the High Street, there is another building on the right side that requires only one Spark to enter, so you can go in there without having to purchase anything. The Strategy Center has a bunch of NPCs that give you tips on gameplay.

(1 of 3) If you see a female NPC moving around with sparkles, speak to her to get some free Bones, up to three different times.

For example, you can jump attack the sign by the entrance to get some Joules, but the shiny chest is probably distracting you. To get it, jump over the spikes (cannot burrow underneath them) and toss a Volt Hatchet over the table to destroy the chest. You can then burrow underneath to grab the Bonestone Gem and you can leave after that. If you explored the High Street, you should see two Kear Locks, one in the southeast and another in the northwest. The one in the southeast only leads to some Bones, so ignore it for now. The one in the northwest leads to a small area, but don’t go there for a quick second. See that hole in the ground just past the Kear Lock? You can burrow into it as a sort of fast travel to the front of the two shops in the City Center.

Go back and into the area past the Kear Lock, where one of the NPCs is looking through a telescope. Speak to him to have the NPC mention something flying by one of the planets, so interact with the telescope to look out in space. Towards the right side, there is a big planet and you want to get the whole thing in the telescope’s lens. Doing so will trigger a very short scene of something flying, which happens to be a Kear that ends up hitting you. Head to the screen left of the telescope, paying no mind to the NPC sitting on the bench. Instead, look at the two holes in the railing just to the south of him. Burrow under the one on the right to fall into the chimney of the house below it.

(1 of 4) The hole right by the Kear Lock allows you to quickly travel to the front of the shops in City Center.

You can now navigate your way to the bottom left corner and the chest there, which contains a Bonestone Gem. Don’t be startled by Klumpy appearing as you head to the stairs in the northwestern corner. This takes you to a balcony where you can see a white chest this time. These white chests contain Trinkets, with this one housing the Steady Soles Trinket.

Ossex - Bowery

That’s all for the High Street area, so return to the City Center now. Before you venture to the last area to explore in the town, look for the Vagrant towards the bottom left corner of the City Center. Speak to them and they’ll ask for 100 Bones, so give it to them although it’s not clear what it exactly does right now. There will be a few more of these NPCs in the Bowery, the area to the left of the City Center, so head over there now. The building in the bottom left is the Music Hall, but you cannot enter right now, as the NPC will block you, even if you’re burrowing.

One of the NPCs asking for Bones is near the center, and another is in the northwestern corner. The building in the center has a lot of boxes to break, but other than that, you’re stopped from doing anything else. The big opening at the northern end leads to a small area with another Beggar, as well as a NPC named Frayd. Speak to him and exit/re-enter to see that he’s gone now. You will now find him around town, so explore until he bumps into you, causing him to steal some of your Bones! Keep hitting him repeatedly until he will give up your Bones. He will now return to his original spot, so talk to him there once more to see he’s asking for 1,000 Bones now! If you have the spare Bones, give it to him to receive the Bell of Grace Trinket.

(1 of 4) There are a number of NPCs in Ossex you can give Bones.

That about wraps up this page, as you’ve done all you can do in Ossex for right now. If you wish to do some more optional stuff, check out the Southern Outskirts: Commons page. Otherwise, the first story place you will be going to is the Queensbury Crypt.
