New Game Plus Explained
Nether Kraken Boss Guide
When you begin the game, there will be a short intro, then you will appear on a ship. Walk around for a little bit, but it doesn’t take long before the ship is attacked. When you regain control, enter the doorway right next to you to go into the ship. Here is where you’ll have to figure out how to play the game a little bit. When you press the Jump button, Mina will jump into the air, allowing her to clear some obstacles, like the one on the left. That’s all you’ll need for right now, so fall off the ledge above the first jump, then keep following the path to the Boatswain NPC.
He will move out of the way and allow you to open the large chest there, where you can pick one of three different weapons. You have the Nightstar, a crushing mace, the Blaststrike Maul, a hammer with explosive force, and the Whisper and Vesper, a pair of nimble daggers. Pick whichever you want for now and continue forth, as you can now destroy the colored obstacles. Follow the linear path here until you reach some more stairs to return to the deck.
Play around with the controls a little bit while you’re on the ship.
You’ll get to choose one of the three weapons from the chest.
Which Starting Weapon to Pick¶
When you get the choice to pick one of three weapons at the beginning of the game, you have the option to actually try them all out right then and there. Each of the weapons have their own strengths and weaknesses, but it’s important to remember that you’ll be able to actually upgrade them throughout your journey. That’s not important at the moment of your choosing, though, since you want to make sure you pick one suited to your playstyle.
-
Nightstar: Mace on a chain. It has a medium range and is a good starter weapon because of that. It also has a medium speed, compared to the daggers, so there is a slightly higher chance of potentially being hit while using it.
-
Whisper and Vesper: Twin daggers that are quick and has a shorter range than the Nightstar. This one can put you more in danger of getting hit by enemies, especially since you have to be closer to strike foes.
-
Blaststrike Maul: The strongest of the three starting weapons, the maul’s basic attack is very short. However, you have the option to charge up a more powerful strike, although you are seemingly stuck in place. You can, however, move while charging to perform a dodge roll. Highest learning curve out of the three weapons and probably more suited for experts.
You’ll face off with the Nether Kraken on the deck of the ship.
Beating it will actually unlock a Trinket earlier than normal.
Before you can do much of anything, a creature attacks the ship again and comes aboard. Feel free to attack the Nether Kraken’s tentacles whenever you come onto the deck, but this battle is hard to win. If you lose, don’t fret, as the game will continue, with the boat crashing into the cliffs. Should you wish to defeat the Kraken and successfully do so, you will receive the Uranium Bracelet Trinket, which increases the damage you do, but also the damage you take. Move after regaining control and you’ll be given the Plasma Vial, your healing potion. Feel free to drink one now to refill your health, but let’s talk about this before you continue.
Plasma Vials and Healing¶
As you can see on the bottom left, you will start with three Plasma Vials. The important part to remember is that healing only replenishes the yellow bit of your health bar. Red is your overall health and if that reaches zero, then you will perish and be sent back to the last checkpoint. If you have just red on your health bar and have been hit, striking enemies can replenish the yellow portion so you can heal again. Sometimes, whenever you break objects in the field, you will see a yellow flower. This does the same thing by replenishing the yellow portion of your health bar.
Plasma Vials are your healing potions for this game.
They will only heal you if you have yellow on your health bar.
With that out of your way, exit the ship and onto dry land. Go south, then east to arrive in Loner’s Landing - Blighted Docks.
