Soul Gems are a key part of Oblivion’s combat. They recharge your enchanted weapons, letting you add powerful elemental strikes to each hit. While these items come in a variety of sizes, Grand Soul Gems can store a good number of charges and are also tied to a quest for curing vampirism. Finding Grand Soul Gems¶
You’ll need five Grand Soul Gems for the Vampire Cure quest. Progressing in this quest, specifically to the conversation with Melisande, spawns additional items for you to find. If you want to avoid combat, simply pop over to all the Mages Guild Halls in Cyrodiil and purchase Grand Soul Gems from mage vendors. You could also opt to clear some of the dungeons we’ve mentioned to get them.

Filling Soul Gems with Soul Trap¶
Once you’ve enchanted your weapons with Soul Gems at an Enchanting Altar (Frostcrag Spire or Arcane University) or with Sigil Stones (obtained by closing Oblivion Gates), you’ll find that they have a limited number of charges for their special properties. These can be replenished by using Soul Gems that have souls trapped inside them.
While you’ll have a decent supply of Soul Gems if you’ve raided dungeons and cleared quests, you still need to trap souls inside them. You can use the Soul Trap spell to do so. Since it has a timer, you’ll need to kill an enemy quickly after casting it on them to trap their soul. Doing so will automatically select the appropriate Soul Gem to fill based on the power of the monster. The more powerful a creature is, the larger its soul.
Soul Trap is a Mysticism spell available at most mage vendors. As your Mysticism value increases, the spell will let you capture souls in a radius around you. You can also enchant your weapons to have the Soul Trap spell, removing the necessity of casting it separately.
You can pay a vendor to recharge your weapons at a steep cost.
Using Soul Gems to recharge enchanted weapons¶
To recharge your enchanted items, select the Soul Gem in your inventory and then pick the item you want to refill. Select Recharge and your weapon will gain its charges back. Its charges will be filled based on the size of the Soul Gem and the souls you’ve stored within them. Naturally, Grand Soul Gems will be able to store more souls than Petty, Lesser, Common, and Greater ones.
