There are a large number of quests in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, some of which are tied to various factions, like the Thieves Guild. In order to join the Thieves Guild, you will first need to find a meeting place, then you will have to go through a little orientation. After finding the meeting place, the Doyen, named Armand Christophe, will have a little competition that you have to go through. This page will guide you through the May the Best Thief Win quest, including where to find Amantius Allectus’ Diary, how to steal it, and what happens should you fail.
Amantius Allectus’ House Location¶
This quest can be a little challenging, due to it being a competition between you, Amusei and Methredhel. The former isn’t going to do anything, but Methredhel will go straight after the diary, as she knows where Amantius Allectus’ house is located. You have two options on trying to pinpoint his house, one of which is to just follow Methredhel there. Of course, she is quick and if you try the other option, it is highly likely she will beat you there anyway. Note that as you start this quest, Amusei will mention something, but you can safely ignore him.
(1 of 3) It’s easier to just follow Methredhel at the beginning of the quest.
If you wish to go the other route, you’ll have to ask one of the beggars for information. If you went that route in learning about the Thieves Guild, then it’s a good idea to ask the same beggar for information on Allectus, as their disposition will already be high enough to not need to do it again. After all is said and done, you learn Allectus’ home is in the Temple District, so it’s not too far. It’s probably just easiest to follow Methredhel, since she will likely beat you to the house before you can get there.
Once you arrive at the house, you will need to pick the lock to get inside (even if Methredhel literally arrives right before you). As soon as you’re inside, you want to quickly move to the side of the room and look for the desk there. The diary you need is inside that desk and if you don’t grab it quickly, Methredhel will loot it after like ten or so seconds of being inside the house. However, don’t fret should she get the diary first, as you still have an opportunity to get it prior to her turning it in.
Stealing from Methredhel¶
Methredhel won’t turn in the diary right away, so if she grabs it first, you have an opportunity to get it back from her. The first thought will be to pickpocket it, but she’s not going to be just waltzing back to the Waterfront District. The time limit to get the diary back from her seems to be around 24-36 hours or so. You can go to her house, which is in the Waterfront District, but you will probably want to visit it when she’s either asleep or not there. Ideally, going around 6pm or so is when she’s not near her house at all.
(1 of 4) If Methredhel gets to the diary first, the game will tell you via updating the quest.
Pick the lock to get into her place, but be careful, as there might be other NPCs in there. This makes it a lot more difficult to steal the diary, especially if they’re awake. If everyone is asleep, then look for the chest and pick the lock on it. After opening it, you should find the diary, so loot it and exit the house before you’re seen.
Once you have the diary on hand, pass the time until it’s close to midnight, then return to the Garden of Dareloth to give it to Armand. You will officially become a member of the Thieves Guild now!
