Nirnroot Locations

Nirnroots have become something of a staple in the Elder Scrolls series, being somewhat rare plants with unique properties. In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion they are required for the quest Seeking Your Roots, which is a scavenger hunt that will require you to put in some serious leg-work if you wish to uproot all one-hundred Nirnroots required. This page will list every Ninroot in the game we’ve found, broken up into regions for ease of use, with directions and links to our interactive map to ensure you find all the Nirnroots we did!

Page Breakdown

(1 of 4) Talk to an alchemist and they’ll refer you to Sinderion,

Seeking Your Roots

This quest will trigger the first time you pick a Nirnroot, giving you a popup instructing you to find an alchemist to learn more about this strange root. Any alchemist will do, and most cities have one, either running an alchemy shop, dwelling in a city’s mage’s guild building, or both! In our game, we were directed to Selena Oriana, in the Chorrol Mage’s Guild, but if you see a character with the ”Nirnroot” dialog option, it won’t hurt to ask - ultimately you should be directed to consult Sinderion, in Skingrad.

Sinderion operates out of the basement of the West Weald Inn in Skingrad, and if you ask him about Nirnroots he’ll give you the Nirnroot Missive that mentions a key bit of info that’ll be invaluable for the great Nirnroot Hunt waiting for you: Namely, that Nirnroots usually grow near bodies of water. Unspoken, but equally important, is the fact that Nirnroots emit a weird, distorted gong sound when you’re near them, and while you have to be quite close to hear it, it can help you find them when stumbling around.

In any event, Sinderion will first ask you to bring him ten Nirnroots so he can craft an “Elixir of Exploration”. This comes in four grades, and each time you complete an objective he’ll ask you to bring him an increasing amount of Nirnroots to unlock the next potion grade. Not only will you get a free sample of the potion you unlocked, but you can thereafter buy that potion from Sinderion, as follows:

Seeking Your Roots - Elixirs of Exploration

Nirnroots (Total) Elixir Effects Duration
10 Weak Elixir of Exploration Fortify Health 20pts, Nighteye 300 seconds
20 (30) Moderate Elixir of Exploration Fortify Health/Fatigue 20pts, Nighteye 300 seconds
30 (60) Strong Elixir of Exploration Fortify Health/Fatigue 20pts, Nighteye, Fortify Blade, Blunt, Destruction, Restoration, Sneak and Security 5 pts 300 seconds
40 (100) Grand Elixir of Exploration Fortify Health/Fatigue 20pts, Nighteye, Fortify Blade, Blunt, Destruction, Restoration, Sneak and Security 5 pts 300 seconds

These potions are fairly useful for generation exploration, and long-lasting, to boot. Whether it’s worth the trouble of digging up 100 Nirnroots is another matter, but half the fun of the game is exploration, and nothing will encourage you to explore Cyrodiil like seeking out Nirnroots will!

Finding Nirnroots

Before we get to the momentous task of tracking down the Nirnroots growing in Cyrodiil, here are some things to keep in mind: As mentioned before, Nirnroots grow near water (usually within a few paces, at most) and make a noise when you’re close. You can find many of the game’s Nirnroots just by following the shoreline. If you want to really dedicated yourself to the task, turn off all in-game noise save for master volume and ambient volume - that way Nirnroots will be one of the few things you actually hear in the game. That said, some Nirnroots are actually cultivated and can be found indoors, in planters. Getting ahold of these Nirnroots is usually stealing, but a stolen Nirnroot doesn’t flag as stolen in your inventory, so as long as you get away with the initial theft, you don’t really have to worry about it too much. A few Nirnroots can also be found in caves/dungeons, but the vast majority can be found outdoors on the world map. Most Nirnroots do not respawn.

While following water is generally a good way to hunt for Nirnroots, this is somewhat undermined by the fact that Oblivion’s map isn’t always in agreement with the actual in-game geography. Sometimes what appears to be a peninsula is actually an island, what appears to be land is water, and vice-versa, and in many cases some bodies of water aren’t marked on the map at all - most notoriously the swamps of Blackwood, northeast of Leyawiin, where around 30~ Nirnroots can be found. Unless you know to look there, you might skip over it entirely, as it appears to be dry land - low-yield terrain for Nirnroots.

Finally, to make this more manageable, we’ve split things up into more manageable chunks of exploration. There are lots of Nirnroots in the game and some regions aren’t as bountiful as others, but to reduce the amount of scrolling you have to do, we’ve split Cyrodiil up into various regions and listed their Nirnroots. If you find this useful, a section of each map will be provided on this page for each contrived region, if not, you can just check out the full interactive map and hunt for Nirnroots using that tool… or perhaps a mix of the two.

The table below covers the Nirnroots found in the Imperial City, on the City Isle, and around Lake Rumare.

The table below covers the Nirnroots found in The Lower Niben, in and around Leyawiin and Blackwood.

Lower Niben, Leyawiin and Blackwood Nirnroot Locations

The southernmost reaches of Cyrodiil are bundled up into one table, as far as Nirnroot hunting goes. This includes The Lower Niben, Leyawiin and its environs, Blackwood and the southern shore of the Panther River. It’s worth noting that this is probably the most densely-packed region in the game, and while there’s no indication on the map, much of north-central Blackwood is swampland, where around 30~ Nirnroots grow.

Number Location Map Marker
1 From Reedstand Cave (south, southeast of Bravil) head along the coast of The Lower Niben until you spot a bridge spanning the river. This Nirnroot is near a bush with purple flowers, which in turn is next to a tree. The bush makes it hard to see this Nirnroot from all directions save the east. Map Marker
2 From Reedstand Cave, follow the coast to the south until you find a bridge spanning the river. Head up to the bridge, then turn around to the east to spot this Nirnroot near a bush. Map Marker
3 North of Leyawiin you’ll find Rockmilk Cave. This Nirnroot is northeast of Rockmilk Cave, within sight of the wooden bridge spanning The Lower Niben. It’s just west of an island in the river (which looks like a peninsula on the map) where you can find two more Nirnroots. Map Marker
4 Northwest of Fort Redman (north of Leyawiin, on the east bank of The Lower Niben) you’ll find a small island in the middle of the river (on the map this river looks like a peninsula, but it is in fact an island). This Nirnroot can be found along the southwestern edge of the island, behind a boulder. Map Marker
5 On an island in the middle of The Lower Niben, which is northwest of Fort Redman (located on the eastern bank of The Lower Niben, north of Leyawiin). This Nirnroot can be found along the north tip of the island, behind a tree. Map Marker
