Metaphor: ReFantazio

Gunner Archetype

By
Echo Apsey

The Gunner is another of the basic Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Perfect for combat in the overworld areas of the game, you can use weapons to damage, stun, or kill enemies and restore HP. It also has a range of other attacks which can help out in battles. It is weak to Slash damage and strong against Electric damage.

Investing in the Gunner will allow you to unlock its only advanced forms: the Sniper and Dragoon. The Gunner Archetype is a powerful choice, forced to stay in the back row to use any skills, but with powerful, status element dealing attacks that can do everything from poison your enemies to put them to sleep.

How to unlock the Gunner Archetype

The Gunner Archetype is unlocked significant further into the game than when More will tell you about it. Once you reach Martira and have free time to speak with Neuras, you will be able to begin your bond with them and obtain the Archetype.

This is still one of the earliest Archetypes in the game taking into account all of them, but it is one of the later base forms you can earn.

Gunner Skills

The Gunner has access to six different Skills:

  • Comeback Victory - [Hero passive] Recovers HP each time an enemy is stunned or defeated in overworld combat
  • Sleep Shot - Only usable from the back row. Deals weak physical Pierce damage to one enemy. May inflict Sleep (8 MP)
  • Poison Shot - Only usable from back row. Deals medium physical Pierce damage to one enemy. May inflict Poison (10 MP)
  • Sukukaja - Increases one ally’s Hit/Evasion for 3 turns (8 MP)
  • Aim Support - [Passive] Increases hit rate by 10%. Boost increases further if archetypes of the same Lineage are present
  • Hex Shot - Only usable from the back row. Deals heavy physical Pierce damage to one enemy. May inflict Hex (22 MP)

These passives really help boost your ranged skills from the back row and are key to success with the Gunner. With all the ranged shots dealing Pierce damage, you do want to ensure that your enemy isn’t resistant to it. Otherwise, it is best to use the Gunner as a support class, healing allies or by using Sukukaja.

Gunner Synthesis Skills

The Gunner has access to three Synthesis Skills depending on the classes it is paired with:

  • Wild Barrage - Only usable from back row. Deals medium physical Pierce damage to all enemies 2-3 times (14 MP) [Allies needed: Gunner, Faker, or Summoner Lineages]
  • Masukukaja - Increases all allies’ hit/evasion for 3 turns (18 MP) [Allies needed: Seeker, Knight, or Commander Lineages]
  • Mania Bullet - Only usable from back row. Heavy physical Pierce damage to one enemy. Inflict a 1-time weakness to Slash/Pierce/Strike (22 MP) [Allies needed: Thief, Faker, or Merchant Lineages]

As with the regular Skills, both ranged attacks here are fantastic, especially in boss fights with Mania Bullet being an incredibly powerful skill that can enhance your melee damage and other physical damage greatly. Masukuaja is also an excellent Synthesis Skill for boss fights to give you that upper hand that you simply don’t have by default.
