Metaphor: ReFantazio

Metaphor: ReFantazio Thief Archetype

By
Echo Apsey

The Thief is one of the basic Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio. It is almost entirely built around being able to steal items from enemies to boost your party, as well as possessing unique Skills to drain their HP and MP. Focusing on Dark magic, they can nullify enemy buffs and severely weaken them. The Thief is weak to Electric damage and highly resistant to Dark damage.

Investing and ranking up the Thief will allow you to unlock its Adept and Elite forms: the Assassin and Ninja. The Thief Archetype is a challenging choice, requiring a lot of skill to use well, but skilled players can do a lot with the class.

How to unlock the Thief Archetype

The Thief is unlocked once you befriend Heismay and reach bond Rank 1. This happens about a month after the game starts around 07/04. Once you have formed this bond, you can spend MAG to unlock the Thief Archetype.

By ranking up to Rank 20 and progressing Heismay’s bond, you can then unlock its Adept and Elite forms.

Thief Skills

The Thief has access to 7 different Skills, one of the highest numbers of any Base form:

  • Pickpocket - [Hero Passive] Chance of getting an item each time an enemy is tunned or defeated in overworld combat
  • Dark Sword - Deals weak physical Slash damage to one enemy. May inflict Forget. (6 MP)
  • Steal - Steals a rare item from one enemy (the higher your agility, the higher your success rate) (4 MP)
  • Mudo - Deals weak magic Dark damage to one enemy (4 MP)
  • Plunder Life - Drains HP from one enemy to restore your own (6 MP)
  • Plunder Magic - Drains MP from one enemy to restore your own (1 MP)
  • Mudoon - Deals medium magic Dark damage to one enemy (10 MP)

Unlike many of the other classes, all of these skills have their uses in their own situations. There isn’t a particular strategy to adopt. Simply use the Thief and the party member it is equipped on where you need to steal some health, MP, or an item. The Dark damage is handy against many Light-based enemies.

Thief Synthesis Skills

The Thief has access to 3 Synthesis Skills:

  • Mamudo - Required Skill: Mudo. Deals weak magic Dark damage to all enemies (6 MP) [Allies needed: Seeker, Mage, or Healer Lineages]
  • Phantom Tracer - Deals extreme physical Slash damage to one enemy and removes buff effects (12 MP) [Allies needed: Warrior, Thief, or Masked Dancer Lineages]
  • Mamudoon - Required Skill: Mudoon. Deals medium magic Dark damage to all enemies (10 MP) [Allies needed: Seeker, Mage, or Healer Lineages]

Both Dark damage skills are worth using when and where you can for the same reasons as the regular skills. However, Phantom Tracer is a useful Synthesis Skill for its ability to remove buff effects - something you will find more and more as you progress deeper into the game.
