Hell is Us is a game known for its difficult puzzles, and as you make your way through the story to the town of Jova, you’ll need to find a code to access Vitalis’ basement to progress. Read on to find out how you can get the pieces to complete this puzzle, and what you’ll find behind the ominous locked door.
In the basement of Vitalis’ Home is a secret office hidden behind a code-locked door.

Vitalis’ Home Key Location¶
Before you can access the basement in Vitalis’ home, you’ll need the Key to his house. This is obtained from his friend, Victor, who is located in the Acasa Marshes. From Jova (town east of Acasa Marshes), follow the path out of town into the marshes and go over the nearby bridge to the east. Continue east along the path, go past the Timeloop, and go over the next bridge, and head north at the intersection.
This map shows you exactly where you can find Victor. You can find the map on a table at the ON Outpost on the eastern side of the village.
Follow the tunnel to the back and enter the room to your right.
Follow this path until you reach another intersection, and you should see the tunnel to the east. Go in the tunnel, defeat the enemies, and enter the room at the back to your right. Here, you’ll find Victor, an important person in the story, and he’ll hand over the “Key - Vitalis’ Home” after going through his dialogue. Now, head back to Jova by going south and then west.
Go through Victor’s dialogue, and he’ll ask you to go to Vitalis’ home.
This will lead to him giving you the key to enter it.
Vitalis’ Home Location¶
Enter Jova, where Captain Vaas is stationed, and head west. Take a right when you pass the truck where the Fearful Fiddler is (north) and finally go northwest around the corner. Vitalis’ house will be on your left, opposite the Blacksmith, who won’t be there until you enter the house.
Vitalis’ home is in the northeast part of Jova, opposite the Blacksmith building.
Family Pictures¶
If you explore Vitalis’ house, you’ll eventually find yourself in the basement. In the basement is a locked door with a keypad, and to find the code, you’ll need to do some investigative work. If you searched every corner of Vitalis’ house, you would have found three Family Pictures. If not, here is where you can find them.

Family Picture 1: Located on top of the drawers in the kids’ bedroom.

Family Picture 2: Located in the study next to the kids’ bedroom.

Family Picture 3: Located in a chest by the ladder leading to the basement. Use the Heirloom necklace to open it.
These are important items to find, as two of them will have a number on them, and the last one shows you the toy car used, which you can find inside the house for the last part of the code. Once you have all three photos, head into the basement and follow the linear path to where the locked door is.
Vitalis’ Secret Office Code¶
To the left of the locked door is a wall that you can interact with. This is so you know the order to input the code. Interact with the wall and place the family pictures in order by their shape of their frame. You want to place the photo with the 32 on the car in the first slot. The second slot will be the picture with the toy car displaying 17, and the last picture will be the one with the green car.
This will give you the code 3217, but you need the last two digits. Head back up the ladder to where you found the chest, and near it will be the car in the third picture. Take a note of the number on the car, and it will give you the number 13. With all the digits put together, you’ll get the code 321713. Enter this code into the keypad on the locked door to open it, revealing Vitalis’ Secret Office.

For the last part of the code, go back up the stairs and look at the car next to the chest.
Vitalis’ Secret Office Rewards¶
Take a look inside the office to find the following items:
- Lymbic Greatsword: Located against the wall in the southwest corner.
- Lymbic Rod - Grief, W: Located inside the small lockbox on the table to the right of the doorway.
- Vigil Note: Located on the bookshelf to the right of the doorway.
- Glyph - Perfect Guard: Same place as the Vigil Note.
- Glyph - Lingering Pain: Same place as the Vigil Note.
- Glyph - Rage Spike: Same place as the Vigil Note.
- Glyph - Frightful Ambush: Same place as the Vigil Note.
- Glyph - Delirium: Same place as the Vigil Note.
Make sure you check the lockbox on the table next to the doorway for the Vigil Note.
That’s it for Vitalis’ Secret Office. After investigating the house, head back outside and speak to Victor, who will now be in the Blacksmith building opposite. This will unlock Blacksmithing for you, allowing you to upgrade your weapon as well as place glyphs in it. Finally, hand over the Vigil Note to Victor to unlock the explorable location, Vyssa Hills.
