How to Get a Scanner
How to Get the Sonic Resonator
Early on in Subnautica 2 you’ll notice that the Fabricator on your Lifepod is… of limited utility. Some things simply cannot be built there, as they’ll be marked with a red exclamation point, and you’ll be told you need a “fully functional Fabricator”. Anybody who has played a survival game before probably understands the objective: Build a base with your own Fabricator inside to get the full utility of the device. As safe and comforting as your Lifepod may initially seem, it’s not fit for purpose in the long term - you’ll have to fly the nest eventually, and to do that you’ll need to create a Habitat Builder tool. To that end, this page will cover how to unlock the recipe for the Habitat Builder and how to craft it.

To craft a Habitat Builder, you must first scan one out in the wild - search abandoned bases and crates to find them. One can be found near the Angel Comb where you’ll get the Digestion Adaptation,
while two more can be found near the Welcome Center.
Scan a Habitat Builder¶
There are a few ways you typically learn new recipes: find blueprints (usually in containers, and usually in the ruins some some failed settlement), craft a new resource or material to unlock related recipes, or find furnishings or tools (often in a non-functional state) lying around in the wilderness and scan them. In the case of the Habitat Builder, we opt for the latter option… assuming there are any alternatives to this.
To scan a Habitat Builder you’ll first need a Scanner, so check out the linked page for more information on that. Once armed with your Scanner, swim north, northeast towards the Angel Comb where you can obtain the Digestion Adaptation. You can follow a black wire on the sea floor most of the way there, and you’ll be pointed to this location when you’re investigating a colonist named Anita. When you arrive, search a man-made platform on the sea floor next to the Angel Comb. It’s about 160 meters away from the Lifepod. You’ll find a broken Habitat Builder tool sitting on a crate - scan it and you should get the recipe for it.
You can also find TWO Habitat Builders you can scan at the Welcome Center roughly 80 meters southeast of the Lifepod. One is a box behind the Welcome Center and another is in a cave underneath it. The game REALLY wants you to have these, and yet, they can be pretty easy to miss, especially if you go exploring before building your Scanner!

Craft a Habitat Builder¶
Return to your Lifepod and you’ll find a shiny new recipe for your Habitat Builder. To create it you’ll need to supply 2x Titanium, 1x Glass, 1x Basic Battery and 1x Copper Wire. Most, if not all, of these ingredients can be found in the sea around the Lifepod… assuming you didn’t loot them already. Titanium is just about everywhere and should be an issue.
The Basic Battery - something you may have needed to recharge your Scanner - functionally requires 4x Copper and 1x Acidic Raion Pouch. Both can be found in a cave just below the Lifepod, just search the wall for Copper deposits and use your Survival Multitool to destroy the big pink plants, each of which should yield three units of Acidic Raion Pouch. Once the acid is safely harvested, you can also grab the green Medical Gel Sack that makes up the plant’s stalk, a consumable that can restore 10 health without needing a proper Fabricator. Once you have the materials mentioned above, craft the Basic Battery and Copper Wire at the Fabricator - they’re listed under the “Resources” category.
Finally, to make glass you need Quartz, which can be somewhat elusive until you have the [Sonic Resonator]. You need 2x Quartz to make one unit of Glass, and you can find some Quartz in the vicinity of the Life Pod, on the sea floor. Just look for off-white mineral deposits. The best way to find Quartz, however, is to look out for Coral Domes. These generally come in two forms - circular rough orange structures with pearlescent interiors, or fragmentary remains thereof, in which case you’ll want to keep an eye out for the pearlescent chunks lying around. Quartz can form on these Coral Domes, sometimes in great quantities.
Once you’ve constructed a Habitat Builder, you can finally untether yourself from the Lifepod and begin building your first base!
Once you have all the materials you need (and the resources created from said materials), craft your Habitat Builder! Check out our Habitat Building Starter’s Guide for some tips about getting your first habitat built, powered and furnished!
