How to Get a Scanner

Those who have played previous Subnautica entries know how important the Scanner is, since it allows you to effectively scan all manner of things. This includes various lifeforms, as well as getting new tools, and other parts. Basically, one of the first things you should do in Subnautica 2 is make the Scanner. In order to make a Scanner, you will need some Titanium, Quartz, and a Basic Battery. This page will tell you where to find each of these materials, so read on to get the scoop!

Titanium Location

The first material on this list is probably the easiest to find, as Titanium is probably one of the first items you will find while exploring around the initial Lifepod. As you shouldn’t go very far from the Lifepod at the beginning of the game, you should always search the sea floor near it for any Titanium and collect as much as possible. You really shouldn’t have much trouble at all in procuring Titanium.

Titanium is pretty common and you should have no trouble finding some.

There are even some larger chunks out there that will yield more when you break them.

Quartz Location

Quartz is something you will need a lot of in the early stages of the game, but it’s something that can be a little trickier to find. Quartz is primarily found around coral, so you will want to search for bunches of coral in the starting area. There are a number of coral domes (these are named when you get close enough to them), so look for those and check underneath the domes to see if there are any openings. If you can go underneath the domes, then there will be a high chance that you’ll find Quartz on the walls inside.

To find Quartz in the world, especially in the beginning, look for various coral formations.

Some of the coral domes you can enter, where you’ll see Quartz growing inside, on the ceilings.

Basic Battery

The last item needed to construct a Scanner is the Basic Battery and while you might potentially find some in containers and such from exploring, you will most likely need to make it yourself. In order to do this, you’re going to need some Copper and something called an Acidic Raion Pouch. Copper might be the worst of the two to find, although once you know what to look for, it’s not too difficult to locate. Despite the exotic name, the Acidic Raion Pouch is extremely easy to obtain.

Copper Location

Finding Copper can be a bit tedious, especially at the start of the game, when you have low oxygen and the like. You’ll want to look along cave roofs and overhangs for Copper deposits. There should be quite a few cave areas near the start of your Lifepod, so definitely check them out to try and secure some Copper. You’ll need at least two pieces in order to construct the Basic Battery, so get those.

Copper can be found on stone archways, as well as inside caves.

You’ll need the Multitool in order to get the Acidic Raion Pouches from these flora.

Acidic Raion Pouch Location

Before you can get this item, you will need the Survival Multitool, which should be easy to craft, as it just requires Titanium. Once you do, drop back down into the water and search for the pink-like color, with a green thing in the middle. The green thing is a Medical Gel Sac, which is used in crafting stronger healing kits, and they can be picked without needing the above tool. You also want to be careful, as taking the sac will cause some toxic gas to spew out, so quickly move away from the plant to avoid taking damage. That’s not necessary here, though, as you want the pinkish stuff on the side. That’s the Acidic Raion Pouch and you just use your multitool on it to acquire the goods.

Once you have all of the necessary materials, return to the Lifepod and first construct the Basic Battery. With that in hand, as well as the other things above, you can then go on to make the Scanner. You should be scanning just about anything, especially if it’s new to you. The primary use of the Scanner is to get new blueprints, usually by scanning various parts throughout the game’s world. For example, in order to make the structures, you’ll need to scan the Habitat Builder twice while exploring.
