The old leveling system in Oblivion was… a bit of a trap for beginners and a delight for hardcore min-maxers who weren’t afraid to plan out a build on a spreadsheet. In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, leveling has been streamlined, and as a recovering min-maxer, this system is just better for gamers who want to just explore Cyrodiil without the specter of major skills, minor skills, and each skill’s governing attribute looming over their adventures. That said, some skills can still be a chore to level, even if you don’t have to be picky about which ones you level and when, and one way to make quick progress in a skill is to simply pay a trainer to show you the ropes. This page will cover how trainers work in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, including all their locations and how to convince each master trainer to share their knowledge with you!
Page Breakdown¶
(1 of 2) If an NPC can train you, they’ll have a button you can select to bring up the training window.
If an NPC can train you, they’ll have a button you can select to bring up the training window. (left), Trainers come in three tiers - Apprentice Journeyman, and Master, and can train you to different levels… if you pay them. (right)
Training Skills¶
Every skill in the game has 4-8 trainers (averaging about 5 trainers per skill) - individuals who are notably accomplished in a skill to the point where they can, for a fee, pass on some of their knowledge. In many cases this is a straight-forward enough process: talk to an NPC and if they’re a trainer, there will be a “train” button under their dialog options, where the “persuading” and “bartering” buttons are. There are, however, numerous complications, caveats and restrictions to be aware of:
- You can only train five times per level, whether it’s one skill five times or five skills one time, it doesn’t matter. After you sleep in your bed and assign attributes points, you’ll be able to train again.
- Training costs gold - a few hundred to a few thousand, depending on the level of the skill being trained. This can make it rather difficult to train at lower levels (not to mention redundant, since leveling up most skills >50 is fairly easy).
- Trainers have their own skill levels, and they cannot train you if your skill is higher than theirs.
- Lower-tier trainers are usually happy enough to train you if you just talk to them (and pay), but Master trainers tend to have some sort of quest or test involved. To avail yourself of the services of a Master-level trainer, you must hit Lv70 in the chosen skill and ask an Advanced trainer about further training, which will start the quest to get training from the Master trainer in that skill.
- Trainers, like any other NPC, have their own schedules and may not be willing to train you at all times of day. It may be worth waiting a few hours and talking to them in another location if the “train” button doesn’t show up.
(1 of 3) Ask any advanced trainer about “Training” and they’ll refer you to the master trainer, provided your skill score is 70+.
With those things in mind, here are all the trainers in the game, sorted by skill and quality of the trainer, with map markers:

All in all, there’s no good reason - save for early-game lack of funds - not to train five times every level. Leveling up skills via training still gets you EXP towards your next character level, so as long as you have the funds and access you might as well avail yourself of this shortcut, especially some of the more annoying skills to max out, like Hand-to-Hand, Block, or really any combat skills that aren’t also something you plan to use all the time and/or aren’t Major Skills.
