The Paladin is very well-balanced, with good defenses and good offenses. Defender encourages you to pair up, not only allowing you to enjoy pair-up boosts from the characters, but then adds +1 on top of that to turn them into very tanky units, if the resulting army downsize can be afforded (units in guard stance can’t attack, after all). Aegis is chance-based and so will rely on RNG but can still be useful, especially in conjunction with skills like Armored Blow, to help bolster a fragile unit.
At the very least, Aegis is worth grabbing before reclassing into someone else. Paladins also enjoy very large movement range since they are mounted.
