P: Kirkwall - The Gallows Long Way Home

You gain the quest 'Long Way Home' and are left outside the walls of Kirkwall. Approach the large crowd to speak with Guardsman Wright who directs you to talk to the Captain if you want in. Head up the stairs and follow the hallways until you reach an opening in the courtyard. At the northeast end you will find a merchant but you want to talk to Captain Ewald. After some words the nearby deserters turn on the group and you are thrust, once again, into the midst of battle.

Speak with the guard and defeat the deserters when they attack.

After the scene check the Kirkwall - The Gallows monument for a codex update. You need to find Meeran or Athenril in order to progress but the path splits depending on whom you agree to aid. You can take up both sides but you can only do one or the other to a certain degree.

Note: Depending on your choice, you will earn a different achievement/trophy. Your choice will also affect your outcomes with the two characters during the rest of the game.

Meeran's Path

Meeran needs you to find Lord Friedrich and assassinate him. You can either outright kill him or inquire as to his deeds and convince him to pay you in order for you to spare him. Receiving 2 Sovreign for his life however, results in the men attacking you. This path also causes Meeran to be angry and send you off without helping, thus leaving you to find Athenril.

Allied yourself with the mercenaries upon arriving in Kirkwall.


Athenril's Path

Athenril needs you to give a little visit to the merchant Cavril in the market. You can fight Cavril and his men, extort him for the money, or use Aveline to mediate and receive the 2 sovreign from the chest without a conflict.

Allied yourself with the smugglers upon arriving in Kirkwall.


Afterwards return to Gamlen for a series of events that lead into Act I.
