How to Get Fen Bass Oil - Nightingale

By
Matt Chard

Oil made from Fen Bass is one of Ludivine Saint-Clair’s ritual components in Nightingale, but how do you get this, you may ask? Well, fishing of course! However, to do this, you need to know where you can find them, what gear you need to capture them, and other handy tips to make this tedious task less tiring. You can find the answer to all these questions as well as what you need to extract the oil from the fish to create the ritual component by reading on.

Fen Bass Locations in Nightingale

In short, the Fen Bass can be captured in a T1 Swamp Realm and beyond, but the Antiquarian Swamp will suffice. You can find Fen Bass in any pool of water in the Swamp as long as the water is deep enough. The best way to find out if the water is deep enough is to wade through it, and if you begin to get diseased, the water is deep enough. Alternatively, you can just keep casting your line into different spots in the water until you find a deep enough spot. Note that you can do this in regular swamp water, it doesn’t need to be in the sea or anything like that.

Now, you may see a lot of Redeye Bass. These are the common version of the Fen Bass, and the most likely fish to appear. If you don’t care about these, simply press the hotkey your fishing rod is on, and you’ll let it loose, which allows you to cast again almost immediately. The Fen Bass is rarer than its Redeye brethren, but you should still see one in every six fish you get on the line. One thing we noticed is that there appeared to be less frequent spawns at night. This could be a coincidence, but we recommend fishing during the day to give you the best chance of acquiring the fish. You will need eight oils for Ludivine, and four Fen Bass make two oils, so you’ll need 16 Fen Bass to get all the required oils, which makes this task tedious because the Fen Bass is semi-rare.

Fen Bass Fishing Tips

To start with, you’ll want at least a Simple Fishing Rod that has been upgraded in the upgrade bench to level 40+. The reason for this is Fen Bass are level 30 fish and if you have a lower gear score, you’ll struggle to get the fish. Considering you require 16 of them, you want to make this as easy as possible. Before you fish, make sure you have eaten beforehand, especially food that increases your stamina as that is one of the main ways you’ll fail to capture the fish. Well, that, or the line breaking. One last thing you could do to make things more efficient is to apply the Charm of Endless Fishing, as this prevents you from becoming tired or hungry while fishing. This is more than enough to get the Fen Bass, but if you want to make things even easier, then craft the Angler and Amphibious Minor Cards in the realm. Finally, if you want more fishing tips, check out our How to Fish Guide.

How to Make Fen Bass Oil

Now that you have your 16 Fen Bass, you’ll need to extract the oil from them. To do this, you’ll need the Refined Tanning Station, which can be purchased from the Forest or Swamp Herbarium Essence Trader (or found from Hope Echoes in the same realms). Once you have the Refined Tannery, scroll to the bottom to find oil. Now, interact with the empty slot and select Fen Bass. Two Fen Bass will make one of the eight oils required.

Nightingale is a PvE open-world survival crafting game with a few unique features for the genre. First among these is the Realm Card system, whereby players can discover and craft Major or Minor realm cards to influence aspects of procedurally generated worlds or character attributes respectively. You may find yourself in a more forgiving or hostile world depending on the Major cards you use, but the Minor cards can give you an edge against foes with boosts to damage, health, stamina, or other aspects of survival. The game is set in the Victorian era and has more than a little influence from Steampunk fiction, so if that’s anything like your thing, you’ll love this world!
