Lords of the Fallen (2023)

Ranged and Throwing System - Lords of the Fallen

By
Matt Chard

Lords of the Fallen introduces a new mechanic to the Soulslike genre, changing how the ammo system works. There are a few different choices when it comes to ranged combat which are magic, ranged weapons such as bows, and throwing weapons such as grenades, all of which apart from magic use said system. Read below to find out how you use ranged attacks, and how to replenish your ammo.

There are many ways to attack enemies at range in Lords of the Fallen, and a Bow is just one of them.

How to Use Ranged or Throwing Weapons

Firstly, you’ll need to equip a ranged weapon in the third slot (next to weapons/shield), or leave it as the hand if you want to use throwing weapons. When you have your preferred method of Ranged Attack, equip the ammunition for it in the three slots underneath. The type of ammo you can put there will change depending on what weapon you have equipped. For example, if you equip a bow, the ammunition will display arrows whereas if you equip a crossbow, bolts will appear instead.

With that sorted out, you need to know how to switch between the Lamp, and your ranged attack. The tutorial does a good enough job of explaining this, but if you need a refresher, press 3 / Xbox-Dpad-Up to switch between the Lamp and ranged weapon, then hold L Ctrl / Xbox-TriggerLeft / DualSense-L2 to enter the Ranged Stance, then use your chosen ammo type which is can be selected by using any of the following 3, 4, 5 / Xbox-ButtonA, Xbox-ButtonX, Xbox-ButtonY / DualSense-ButtonCross, DualSense-ButtonSquare, DualSense-ButtonTriangle. Finally, while holding out the lamp, use either MouseLeftButton / Xbox-BumperRight / DualSense-R1 to perform a quick shot/throw (Hold to do a charged shot), or hold MouseRightButton / Xbox-TriggerRight / DualSense-R2 to use an aimed shot/throw, although the latter is restricted on some weapons.

Here’s the in game tutorial for the PC version.

Unlimited Use Ammo for Ranged and Throwing Weapons

When you use a Ranged or Throwing weapon for the first time in Lords of the Fallen, you should notice an odd bar underneath the stamina bar in the top left of the screen. This bar is filled up with numerous gray segments, and then a few which will be yellow. What this means is that you can fire an arrow or bolt, and throw a grenade to your heart’s content provided you keep that bar filled. The yellow section on the bar is the cost of that particular ammo type which all have varying costs (normally between two and three segments).

(1 of 2) In the inventory screen, you can select what Ranged Weapon you want to use which is either Bows, Crossbows, Catalysts, or Throwing. Selecting the slot will bring up all your options.

How to Refill your Ammo Bar

Both Ranged and throwing attacks cost “ammo” as stated above, and if you keep using it, the bar will deplete until you can’t use them anymore. When this happens, you will need to use a consumable item which is aptly named the Ammunition Pouch, or Ammunition Satchel for the better version. The lesser variant can be purchased from the numerous NPC merchants, or found as loot while the higher version will have to be found.

You can purchase various consumables from NPC merchants in Skyrest.

How do Ammo Types Work?

Now that you know how the ammo system works, you’ll probably want to know how the ammo types work. In most games of this ilk, you find a different arrow/bolt type, and when you use all of them, they’re gone. However, in Lords of the Fallen, when you find a different arrow/bolt/grenade, you keep it and assign it the same way you would a spell which you can hold up to a maximum of three, or four slots. So, when you find a Radiant Bolt, you keep it forever and provided you have Ammunition Pouches/Satchels, you can keep using it. The same works with throwing items too, you’ll find a grenade, or a throwing knife, and you’ll be able to keep using it.

How does Magic Work?

Magic on the other hand uses regular Mana similar to most Soulslikes where casting a spell will cost mana, and when the mana depletes, you’ll either need to rest at a Vestige or use consumables such as Manastones to replenish it. The cost of the spell will vary depending on what spell you use whereas some of them will cost you barely any mana such as Radiant Flare while the more powerful spells will end up costly.
