Starfield

How to Assign Crew to an Outpost

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page offers a quick guide on how to assign crew to your outpost in Starfield. You’ll learn all about how to set up a crew station, how to manage your crew as well as some information on handy outpost crew skills!

How to Assign Crew to an Outpost

Like your spaceship, you can assign Crew to your outpost and they’ll hang around at the chosen outpost. They are meant to (we’ll get to this later) help with productivity and increase your crew and robot capacity. To do house crew at an outpost, however, you’ll first have to build a Crew Station at your chosen outpost.

How to Build a Crew Station

Building a Crew Station is thankfully pretty easy. You’ll find the option to build a Crew Station under the “Miscellaneous” tab in the Outpost build tab. To build one, you’ll need x3 "Nickel" iconNickel, x5 "Aluminum" iconAluminum and x2 "Iron" iconIron. If you haven’t already set up some mining extractors, head over to our guide for more information!

Once you’ve built one Crew Station, you can assign 2 crew members to the outpost. If you reach ★★★ "Outpost Management" iconOutpost Management, you’ll be able to assign extra crew members to each outpost by building more Crew Stations. To do this, you’ll need to open up the crew menu from the ship tab in your character menu, then assign your selected crew member to your chosen outpost

Best Crew for Your Outpost

Crew with handy skills such as Outpost Management and "Outpost Engineering" iconOutpost Engineering, and things like "Geology" iconGeology, "Botany" iconBotany and "Zoology" iconZoology should theoretically be useful to your Outpost life. However, at present, it would appear that outpost crew skills are bugged as they do not have any impact on your outpost management or engineering. The community is mostly in agreement that it is likely a bug as there are obvious bonuses and buffs for ship crew members but outposts don’t seem to feel any effects.

That being said, modders (or a quality-of-life patch) will likely fix this issue and then crew members with high Outpost Management and Outpost Engineering skills will be great for (probably) increasing your productivity rates and/or outpost capacity. We suggest the following as potentially good Outpost Crew:

Crew Member Skills How to Get
"Supervisor Lin" iconSupervisor Lin ★★★ "Outpost Management" iconOutpost Management, ★ "Demolitions" iconDemolitions Obtained as a crew member during Back to Vectera.
"Heller" iconHeller ★★★ "Outpost Management" iconOutpost Management, ★ "Geology" iconGeology Obtained as a crew member during Back to Vectera.
"Rafael Aguerro" iconRafael Aguerro "Outpost Engineering" iconOutpost Engineering, ★ "Outpost Management" iconOutpost Management, ★★ "Starship Engineering" iconStarship Engineering Choose to save him during the Entangled main quest.

Supervisor Lin

"Supervisor Lin" iconSupervisor Lin (and "Heller" iconHeller) become available as recruitable crew members when you return to "Vectera" iconVectera during the main quest, Back to Vectera. Supervisor Lin has the Outpost Management Skill, which means she will help increase capacity at your outpost (when it works).

(1 of 2) You can hire Lin after the Back to Vectera quest

Heller

As mentioned, Heller can also be obtained as crew member during "Back to Vectera" iconBack to Vectera. He, however, has the other Outpost skill - Outpost Engineering. When this works, it should boost productivity and allow you to build and reserarch higher tier resources/materials.

Heller can be recruited during the main quest, Back to Vectera.

Rafael Aguerro

This guy is found pretty far into the main quest, during the "Entangled" iconEntangled quest, but he is unique in the fact he has both the Outpost Engineering and Outpost Management skill. He is, however, only ★ in both skills, so perhaps not as good as having both Heller and Supervisor Lin. To obtain this guy as a Crew member, you’ll need to save him when faced with the option.

Rafael Aguerro is found during the Entangled quest.

Then, after the quest, you’ll find him in Viewport in "New Atlantis" iconNew Atlantis. Head over to our guide on Entangled for more information!

Starfield is an action role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios set in a futuristic interpretation of space exploration and colonization. Earth has long been abandoned, but there are plenty of other planets in different star systems where humans have ventured and settled. You have the freedom to create your own character with a unique background, but the main story will take you through a series of adventures as you uncover more information about mysterious artifacts which create gravitational anomalies. Along the way, you can build and customize your own space ship, establish your own outpost, befriend and romance new companions, and more. As a Bethesda game, you can also expect to see a lot of creative mods which have the potential to change your experience of the base game, or take it in an entirely new direction.
