Giant Thorn - Boss Bee Locations

As you progress the main questline and gain levels in various Lives, you’ll unlock new Life Tools and weapons available for crafting. Of course, higher-rank Life Tools and weapons will require increasingly esoteric materials to craft, but this is usually resolved by farming the new enemies you’ll encounter along the way. Not every material is easy to get ahold of, however, and the "Giant Thorn" iconGiant Thorn - a late-game material dropped by the "Boss Bee" iconBoss Bee - can be somewhat tricky to find if you don’t know where to look. This page will discuss the Giant Thorn and how to farm it efficiently from Boss Bees.

Boss Bee Locations

(1 of 3) The Giant Thorn is required to craft some late-game Life Tools, and can only be farmed from the Boss Bee enemy.

Boss Bee Locations

The Giant Thorn can be used to create variants of late game Life Tools like the "Battle Carpenter's Saw" iconBattle Carpenter’s Saw and "Royal Needle" iconRoyal Needle, and the only way to get this material is from the Boss Bee, a miniboss enemy that usually spawns with a cadre of lesser bee enemies. They won’t always drop a Giant Thorn when defeated, but they often will, and since they’re minibosses instead of proper bosses, they’ll respawn any time you zone in and out of an area, instead of the standard 5:00 wait time for proper bosses.

If you inspect the Giant Thorn during the crafting screen you’ll be told that Boss Bees are the source, and that they spawn in Treasure Groves, which… is less than ideal. Sure enough, they can spawn in these randomly generated dungeons, but they are random spawns that aren’t marked, and the idea of wading through Treasure Groves in the hope of locating one of these creatures as a one-off. This will be a very slow and tedious process, especially if you wanted to roll multiple Giant Thorns. You can also encounter a Boss Bee at the arena on Swolean Island, but while this is a guaranteed encounter, it’s also a fight you can only engage in once, and not being repeatable makes it fairly useless for spawning Giant Thorns.

Fortunately, there’s another option, although the game itself doesn’t indicate this. A Boss Bee can spawn northeast of Googlius’s Tower in the East Greatgut Plains region of Ginormosia, albeit only when said region is Area Rank 5 or higher. This will take a good bit of grinding - check out the Area Rank Leveling Guide for more details, but basically you want to complete challenges for the 50-200 Area Points per completion until you get the 8,000 Area Points required to upgrade the region to Area Rank 5. This will be time-consuming, but once done you will find your foe (accompanied by some worker Bees) a short jog northeast of Googlius’s Tower. Kill it, pick up its drops, head back to the tower, and set the Area Rank to 4, then back up to Area Rank 5. This will respawn the Boss Bee and its minions and allow you to perform another run. All in all, this takes a few moments - much, much faster than trying to farm them in Treasure Groves!
