You’ll catch most of the fish in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time just by looking for fish shadows in the Past Map(s), the Base Camp, The Depths and Ginormosia. Even the rare “boss” fish can mostly be found in these areas, and you may reach the endgame thinking you’ve caught every fish in the game. Unfortunately, there are several boss fish which can only be found in Treasure Groves, some of these being the "Beelzebub Tuna" iconBeelzebub Tuna, "Godfish" iconGodfish & "Poseidon Swordfish" iconPoseidon Swordfish. This page will discuss how to find the Beelzebub "Tuna" iconTuna, Godfish & Poseidon "Swordfish" iconSwordfish and get the "Devil's Fin" iconDevil’s Fin, "Godfish Moss" iconGodfish Moss and "Poseidon's Fin" iconPoseidon’s Fin materials from Treasure Groves in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time!

Page Breakdown

You will need boss fish materials to complete numerous Hero Rank quests.

Beelzebub Tuna, Godfish and Poseidon Swordfish - Materials and Uses

If you fish at every fish shadow you spot throughout the game you’ll catch most of the fish. Even when you reach Master Rank as an Angler and start trying to complete the Hero Rank quests, you won’t need to do much more than fish out the Depths - B3 dungeon and a few boss fish on the Swolean Island. It’s not until you try to Master Rank other Lives, like "Artist" iconArtist, "Cook" iconCook and Tailor, that you’ll realize there are a fair few endgame boss fish you haven’t encountered. These include the Beelzebub Tuna, Godfish & Poseidon Swordfish, which, in addition to the fish itself can drop the Devil’s Fin, Godfish Moss and Poseidon’s Fin materials (respectively) when caught, and you will need this to craft the following recipes:

If you want that lovely Master of All Trades achievement/trophy, you’re gonna have to find these fish, as three Lives can’t be raised to Hero Rank without them! Unfortunately these fish only spawn in Treasure Groves, which complicates matters a bit…

Farming Boss Fish in Treasure Groves

To spawn Treasure Groves you will need to find "Treasure Grove Sapling" iconTreasure Grove Saplings - you can get these by farming "Mimic" iconMimics in Ginormosia (any Area Rank should work). When you plant a Treasure Grove "Sapling" iconSapling at Base Camp, it’ll create a randomly generated dungeon with an objective: defeat a boss monster, mine a boss ore deposit, fell a boss tree, harvest a boss vegetable or catch a boss fish. This is also randomly generated, both the type of boss at the end of a Treasure Grove and the type of boss - getting a fishing boss isn’t good enough, that boss fish can be damn near any variety of boss fish in the game, including Beelzebub Tuna, Godfish and Poseidon Swordfish.

First, the good news - when you create a new Treasure Grove dungeon, you will get to previous it before committing. Just look at what boss has spawned and you’ll know exactly what the objective is, and if it’s not one of the aforementioned boss fish (or something else you need), just replant the Treasure Grove. Each replant will consume a Treasure Grove Sapling, but these can be [farmed] at will in Ginormosia. These Treasure Groves can be any year (read: difficulty), so if you want a breezier time of things, just replant them all at 100 Years Ago.

Now for the bad news: farming Treasure Grove Saplings can be time-consuming and tedious, and your odds of getting any one of these boss fish are fairly low. It’s not impossible to burn through two dozen Treasure Grove Saplings and not find any of these boss fish. You also have to make it to the end of the Treasure Grove, which takes time, and there’s no guarantee you’ll get the materials you need at the end. You’ll get the fish itself, but a Godfish is not obligated to drop Godfish Moss, for example. You’ll improve your odds if you get an “Excellent” outcome via overkill, but still, it’s a bummer burning through that much time and effort only to walk away with less than you need.

If you play with friends, you will get a Treasure Grove Branch that will recreate their treasure grove - share the spoils!

Treasure Grove Branches

If you happen to be blessed with charisma sufficient enough to secure friends, your odds of getting these boss fish materials can improve significantly… especially if said friends are also playing through Fantasy Life i and have the same goals in mind. You can join another friend online and play through Treasure Groves together, so if one of you finds a boss fish, you can both reap the rewards together! Even better, if you clear a Treasure Grove in a friends world, you can opt to obtain a "Treasure Grove Branch" iconTreasure Grove Branch that allows you to replant that same exact Treasure Grove in your own world! What else can we say? It pays to have friends, and two players farming together in their own worlds and sharing the spoils will make this grind much, much faster.

Buying Treasure Grove Boss Fish Materials

Fortunately there’s an alternative to Treasure Groves entirely, and while it’s no less luck-dependent than farming Treasure Groves, having two gambles going at once increases your odds of winning. In Ginormosia you will find a wandering merchant named “The Don” - just look for his icon on the map. He travels about slowly and carries many useful consumables, materials and recipes in stock, including potentially any of the boss fish and their materials. His stock is random and changes over time, but a lucky store inventory spawn can save you a lot of time!

Now for the bad news. First, his stock is dependent on the Area Rank of the region he’s in at the time. You will likely need to have each area at Area Rank 5+ to have access to these boss fish, and this itself is a fair grind - check out the Ginormosia Area Rank Leveling Guide for details on how to do this efficiently. Second, you will need "Cashnut" iconCashnuts to purchase items from The Don, and while many of these will be gained by clearing challenges in Ginormosia, it’s probably not enough to buy everything that catches your eye. To get a steady supply of Cashnuts you’ll have to sell vegetables at the Evershops near towns in Ginormosia, which takes time - drop off veggies at every Evershop stall, go busy yourself with some other task (farming Treasure Grove Saplings or clearing Treasure Groves) then return and pick up your Cashnuts. Five normal veggies will yield five Cashnuts and rarer veggies (or in-demand items - randomly determined at each Evershop) will yield more. So if you don’t mind adding farming to your rotation, you grow crops, sell them for Cashnuts and check the stock of The Don between Treasure Grove runs.
