There are two ways to unlock weapons in MW2. Career ranks and weapon families.

How to Unlock Weapons in MW2¶

There are two main ways you get weapons in MW2.

1. Unlocking guns through career level
2. Unlocking weapons through the weapon platform

As you level your account through the MW2 multiplayer, you will naturally begin to unlock weapons. This is the old way of doing things in CoD, so you will naturally get your hands on new weapons to try when you play.

The other method is brand new to MW2. Each weapon has a weapon platform, which makes progressing attachments through a family of weapons much easier. However, the downside is there are leaps and hurdles you need to go through to get your hands on weapons. Typically, you will need to unlock a weapon by using another weapon on the platform, and that weapon will unlock something else.

The main weapon platform families in MW2 are the M4 Platform, Tactique Verte (Scar), Kastovia (Kalashnikov) Lachmann and Meer (German and HK weapons), Bruen Bullpup (Aug), Bryson Long (various MM and Snipers). There are a few smaller families too, but these are the ones that have 3+ weapons within the same weapon platform. To see which weapon belongs to which weapon family, you can see the manufacturer name below the weapon name and description while cycling through weapons.

The M16 unlocks by reaching certain weapons within the M4 family tree.

There is plenty of weapons you can get through the weapon platform system.
M4 Family

• M16: Get the 556 Icarus to level 19.
• 556 Icarus: Get the M4 to level 18.
• FTAC Recon: Get the M4 to level 13.
• FSS Hurricane: Get the FTAC Recon to level 16.

Kastovia weapons

• 74U: Get the Kastov 545 to level 13.
• Kastov 545: Get the Kastov 762 to level 10.
• Vaznev-9K: Get the 74U to level 15.
• Minibak: Get the Vaznev to level 14.
• RPK: Get the Kastov 762 to level 16.

Bruen Bullpup weapons
