Diablo II: Resurrected

Purchase on Amazon

Javelin Amazon (Javazon)

By
Nathan Garvin

Build information for the Javelin Amazon (Javazon), including suggested skills, stat distribution and gear.

Javazon Pros

Pros
Incredibly high damage output.
Competent ranged and melee attacker.
Great crowd control.
Deals both lightning and physical damage.

Javazon Cons

Cons
Gear dependent.
Damage is significantly reduced vs lightning immunes.
Offensive output diminished in enclosed areas, and against fewer enemies.
Attacks can be interrupted.
Somewhat of a glass cannon.

The Javelin Amazon (Javazon) has been blessed with two incredibly potent skills she can use to chastise her foes with - Charged Strike and Lightning Fury. The former is one of the most powerful single-target melee attacks in the game (with some admittedly rather fickle AoE thrown in) while the latter is one of the most overpowered AoEs in the game… with the right gear. Combined they allow for impressive versatility, although she’s significantly less impressive when pit against piecemeal enemy force or lightning immunes.

Titan’s Revenge is essential for a Javazon.

Speaking of gear, the Javazon is not a starter build. Compared to, say, the Berserk Barbarian her gear requirements are fairly low… at least, to be competitive in Hell difficulty. Her top-tier gear is incredibly expensive, but she can do surprisingly well with mid-tier gear. The crux of the build is Titan’s Revenge. If you don’t have one, you might as well not even bother running a Javazon. Fortunately it’s not a very rare weapon, easily farmed from Nightmare Mephisto and later bosses. Without such basic gear, a Javazon will struggle in Nightmare difficulty, much less Hell difficulty. All in all, she’s a fairly slow starter, too, with no great crowd control abilities until Lv18. Start out with something less gear dependant, like a Blizzard Sorceress, then start a Javazon when you’re more established.

(1 of 3) Lightning Fury can decimate entire hordes of enemies.

Once you hit Lv30 and get Lightning Fury, the Javazon really picks up, and when you can equip Titan’s Revenge at Lv42, you’ll be set until Hell difficulty. She performs best when there are crowds of enemies to toss javelins at, and can clear entire screens of enemies in one or two attacks under optimal conditions. She fares just as well against bosses as she does against mobs thanks for Charged Strike, but against lightning immunes she’s reduced to Jab and whatever physical damage her weapons deal, which results in a tremendous step down in killing speed and survivability.

You’ll definitely need to pick your battles in Hell difficulty. Meandering through the Maggot Lair, dealing with masses of lightning immune beetles one at a time is definitely not the ideal situation for a Javazon to find herself in. Dealing with Burning Souls is also a nightmare. If you can find a way past foes like that, however, the Javazon is one of the fastest clearers of the Cow Level, not to mention capable of quickly killing Act 5’s most farmable super uniques - Eldritch, Shenk and Pindle.

The Javazon is has somewhat fickle durability. Her ideal gear (especially for magic finding) doesn’t tend to grant many resistances, and while she can put up a sufficient Life total, her block chance (dependent on her Dexterity score, which will be fairly high for gear) and dodge chance from various passive skills are all RNG. You’ll find her weathering some certain-death situations without a scratch, while being killed by attacks she seemingly should have weathered… such in the nature of a heavily RNG-based defense. Generally, however, the best defense in the Javazon’s case is a good offense - whenever you see a foe, quickly toss several javelins at it and don’t worry about over-committing too much.

Javazon - Skills

While Lightning Fury is the star skill of the Javazon build, Charged Strike is a fair runner up. Fortunately they share synergies (and are synergies with each other!), which makes the process of buying skills pretty straight-forward: you want to invest in Lightning Fury, then Charged Strike, then their synergies. In the case of the Javazon, she almost has too much of a good thing - there are more synergies for her key skills than she has skill points to spend. You’ll want to invest in these Javelin and Spear skills, in order of preference:

  • Lightning Fury
  • Charged Strike
  • Lightning Strike
  • Lightning Bolt
  • Power Strike

The Valkyrie is a potent summon who can help keep the pressure off the Amazon.

As for the Amazon’s Passive and Magic tree, most of the skills here are good, but few are worth investing heavily in due to diminishing returns. You’ll want to get a single point into every skill on the tree, and let +Skills do the rest. With a rather paltry +5~ to skills, you’ll have gotten the most out of many of these skills, one of the few exceptions being Valkyrie - she’s one of the most powerful summons in the game, but this build doesn’t have the points to burn. Even with a minor investment, she’s a decent distraction.

Javazon - Stats

The Javazon’s required stats vary depending on what you want to do with her, farming-wise. At the lowest level, Titan’s Revenge requires 109 Dexterity and 25 Strength (lower if you’re fortunate enough to score an ethereal version of this weapon). If you want a better melee option for lightning immunes, you can use Demon’s Arch in your off-hand, which will require 127 Strength and 95 Dexterity (again, less if you get an ethereal version). Alternatively you can wield a Call to Arms in your offhand, but then you’re going to want a Spirit Monarch accompanying it… which is ideally the best shield to use alongside Titan’s Revenge, anyways. That’ll ring in at 156 Strength. If you want to use common Magic Find gear like Skullder’s Ire and War Traveler, both of those require around 100 Strength.

Suffice to say, you’re going to need a good bit over 100 Strength and Dexterity. 156 Strength for Spirit (less if you have stat-boosting gear on-hand) and 110~ Dexterity, minimum (you probably don’t want to lowball this too much to ensure you have passable Attack Rating).

Everything else goes into Vitality. Alas, this makes the Amazon somewhat fragile compared to many other builds, but at least she has her dodge skills.

Javazon Level-by-Level Stats

Lv Stat
2 - 7 Strength +30 (50)
7 - 11 Dexterity +25 (50)
12 - 30 Vitality +95 (115)
31 - 42 Dexterity +60 (110)
43 - 62 Strength +100 (150)
63+ Vitality (200+)
Lam Esen’s Tome Vitality +15 (200+)

Javazon - Gear

Starting out as a Javazon is rough. Unless you have other players to mooch off of, it’s a tedious process to get her up to snuff. Some relief comes at Lv18, when she gets Charged Strike, but while this will (in a few levels) allow her to impale enemies one at a time, it’s still a slow process, and the charged bolts aren’t really all that dependable. Gamble for rare javelins and stock up on leech and you’ll make it through Normal just fine. Slow… but fine.

Spend a lot of time doing Baal runs - especially if you can find online games to join - and you can easily reach Lv42 before leaving Normal. Ideally you’ll have a Titan’s Revenge lined up. This is virtually essential kit to ensure the Javazon has a decent kill rate in Nightmare, which should be a breeze for a properly-equipped character. If you’re incredibly lucky, Baal might even drop you Titan’s Revenge, but the odds aren’t great compared to, say, Nightmare Mephisto.

In addition to your Titan’s Revenge you’ll want to source midtier gear like Razortail to boost your odds of landing a piercing attack, a Raven Frost to prevent freeze and give useful buffs like +Mana, +Dexterity and +Attack Rating, War Traveler, Aldur’s Advance or Sandstorm Trek are all decent boots (especially War Traveler for Magic Find). Skin of the Vipermagi and Skullder’s Ire will both serve as decent midgame armor, while [Valkyrie Wing], [Vampire Gaze] and [Stealskull] are fine midtier helmets. Even Tal Rasha’s Horadric Crest is a pretty decent bit of kit for its dual leech and +All Resistances. As for rings and amulets, anything with leech (Life and/or Mana), +Strength, +Dexterity, +Life, +Mana and +Resistances should be sought after, along with the typical +Skills on an amulet.

If this all sounds underwhelmingly reasonable, that’s because it is. Getting decent gear on a Javazon isn’t a great feat. Getting top-tier loot is another matter entirely. The gear mentioned above is largely capable of getting you through Hell difficulty, but when it comes to truly asserting your dominance as a Javazon, you’ll want to secure a very, very good rare ring (dual leech, all resistances, or a Bul-Kathos’s Wedding Band to accompany your Raven Frost, not to mention an equally impressive rare amulet (or a Mara’s Kaleidoscope). These and two Spirit Monarchs to accompany your Titan’s Revenge and Demon’s Arch*/Call to Arms are the easiest bit of endgame gear to assemble.

More difficult by far is high-tier armor, like Chains of Honor and a Griffon’s Eye, both of which are rare and expensive, with the former requiring a Ber rune. Perhaps the most expensive gear you’ll want is an Infinity polearm for your mercenary, which will set you back another two Ber runes. While this gear isn’t required to complete endgame runs, they will drastically improve your survivability and kill speed.
