The Homunculus is the go-to totem for the Necromancer, as it provides +2 to all Necromancer Skills, an additional +2 Curses (fair enough, all Necromancer builds use curses of some kind…) and a +40% bonus to all resistances. With a lot of luck you may be able to find a rare that gives you slightly better bonuses to some of the skills your build really needs, but for most Necromancers, you can stop worrying about what to put in your off-hand when a Homunculus drops.

With an iLv of 50 and a required character level of 42, Homunculus falls solidly into the mid-tier range of gear, despite being end-game quality. You can start hoping for one to drop around the middle of Nightmare difficulty, which naturally makes Nightmare Mephisto a good foe to farm for it.
