Like a Dragon: Ishin

Substory 41 - All in the Hips

Jarrod Garripoli

Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of the All in the Hips Substory, found in Fushimi.

Where to Start All in the Hips in Like a Dragon: Ishin

Once you reach Chapter 2 of the main story, you will be forced into a story bit right at the beginning, which has you rescuing a Shinto Priest. Upon doing that, you will be free to explore Fushimi, the first town area of the game. Head on over to Fushimi Ichibangai, the street with all of the shops, and look for the Umai Udon place at the northern end. Interact with the owner and order any of the items on the menu, which will establish a bond with him. When you’ve done that, go back to the shop for a second time and order some udon, which will trigger the start of this Substory.

How to Play the Udon Shop Minigame in Like a Dragon: Ishin

The shop owner will strike up a conversation with you and thanks to your continued support (even though you’ve only went there once), he gives you the most expensive udon on the house. He also says that making the best udon is all in the hips, but in demonstrating this off to you, he ends up hurting himself. This is when Ryoma offers to pitch in at the Udon Shop, starting off this minigame.

Thankfully, your only job at the Udon Shop is to put the toppings on the udon that the owner makes. This comes in the form of button presses that will appear on the bottom of the screen. All four orders are assigned to the face buttons and you will need to memorize the order of the dishes the customers give you. Once all orders are on the screen, a timer counts down and upon reaching zero, the orders will disappear. It’s your job to now input that same string of orders, within the time limit at the very bottom.

Complete the round of orders and you will go onto the next round, where there will be more button presses (up to a maximum of 7) and the timer will dissipate faster. If you get even one button press wrong, then you will fail that round and one of the three hearts in the upper left will be taken away from you. Lose all three of these hearts and you will be finished with that shift at the Udon Shop. To make things a little easier, you have a special help button, in the form of DualSense-L1/Xbox-BumperLeft, where you’ll issue a Chef’s Recommendation.

(1 of 5) The Chef’s Recommendation will flash in the upper left when it’s available

This will put all orders in that round to a single type, so you will only need to press a single button. You only get this little cheat once a shift, but if you fail a round, you will get it back, so you technically get three Recommendations every time you attempt this minigame. For the purposes of this Substory, despite the owner setting a goal of earning 3 ryo, you only need to just play the minigame to completion. It doesn’t matter if you earn 6 ryo or just 100 mon; play the minigame until you lose all three hearts to finish the Substory, although earning 3 ryo does make it end automatically.
