Like a Dragon: Ishin

Substory 48 - The Way of the Sammerai

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of The Way of the Sammerai substory, found in Fushimi.

Where to Start The Way of the Sammerai in Like a Dragon: Ishin

Upon reaching Chapter 6 of the main story, you will be able to find this Substory in Fushimi. Head on over to the dojo that’s unused in the northwestern corner of Fushimi, then head south and then west from it to find some people in the corner there. Approach them for a scene that begins this Substory.

How to Complete The Way of the Sammerai in Like a Dragon: Ishin

A foreigner is asking some samurai if they can teach him how to become a “sammerai.” Being annoyed at his constant badgering in wanting to become a samurai, the two decide enough is enough and go to attack the foreign man. However, Ryoma steps in and chases off the two samurai, with the foreigner telling why he wants to become a samurai to Ryoma. He asks if Ryoma can teach him, so offer to do just that. You will go inside the dojo and a battle will start with the foreign man. This battle is fairly easy and you shouldn’t have to worry about anything, but note that you’ll be using wooden swords, so your damage output isn’t going to be normal.

After defeating the foreigner, he will say that he’ll keep training and will meet you back at the dojo. You will need to exit the area, although you could just enter the singing bar, then exit and return to the dojo. Upon returning to it, you will find Tom standing outside, so speak to him and get ready for a second battle. This is a little more challenging, but still a pretty easy fight. Upon completing that one, go to the singing bar, then return to the dojo for a third time. You will see a scene with some children and the foreigner, then you will be able to do a third battle with him. As before, it’s a little more challenging, but nothing that will make your worry.

It appears that the foreigner is going to stop coming to the dojo, as he will need to think about continuing to become a samurai. After you regain control outside of the dojo, head on over to the Fushimi Ichibangai. Specifically, you want to go to the southernmost bridge there, where you see the children from earlier being harassed by another samurai. The foreigner steps in to protect the children and it will eventually lead to a battle with him and you, against nine enemies. None of the enemies are anything to worry about, but just make sure the foreigner doesn’t perish, to be on the safe side.

When the battle is over, Tom thanks you for helping him and says he’s going to go back to his home country. This will bring about the end of the Substory, but there’s one more thing you can do after it’s complete. Head on over to the Shinsengumi barracks and just outside the front entrance, you should see Tom standing there. If you speak to him there, he will give you his Trooper Card, which is an Epic rarity one.
