How to Find Ammonia in No Man’s Sky

Mine Rock Deposits on Toxic Planets

The main source for Ammonia in No Man’s Sky is from rock deposits. Although you can technically find it from any deposit on any planet, you’ll have a much better chance of finding it on planets with toxic environments. These planets will usually have rocks which almost always have Ammonia present in them, allowing you to reliably source the material. You can check whether a planet has Ammonia as a primary resource in rocks by scanning it from your starship, then checking the primary elements and materials present on the planet.

Once you’re on the planet, you can use your Analysis Visor to inspect rocks of any type. If the rock has Ammonia present in it, you’ll see it as either the Primary or Secondary Element from the Analysis Visor screen, as shown in the screenshot below.

Recharge and Repair Toxic Protection Modules

Ammonia is primarily used to recharge Toxic Protection Modules, also known as the Ionising De-toxifier from the quickslot menu. You can generally fully recharge this protection module with a stack of about 20 Ammonia, so you don’t need to have a ridiculous amount stored in your inventory. The good news is that you’ll mostly need the Toxic Protection Module charged when you’re on toxic planets, and since these planets are the primary source for Ammonia, you’ll always have some readily available. Most rocks will yield anywhere between 4 - 20 Ammonia depending on their size, and you only need the standard Mining Beam module for your Multi-Tool to extract it.

If your Toxic Protection Module becomes damaged, you can repair it using 50 Ammonia and 1 Wiring Loom. The loom itself can’t be crafted, and is rarely found in the open world, so you’ll most likely need to purchase from a Trading Hub, a visiting pilot, of from the Galactic Trade Terminals at space stations.

Other Sources for Ammonia

Gas Extraction Hotspots

Aside from mining Ammonia from rocks on toxic planets, you can also extract it from planet atmospheres using a Gas Extractor. You’ll need to identify a specific hotspot which yields Ammonia with the Survey Device upgrade for the Analysis Visor, but once you’ve done this you can continually extract Ammonia and keep it stored in Supply Depots.

Refining Ammonia

In addition to extracting Ammonia from the atmosphere, you can also produce it with specific materials by refining them. The viable options for refining Ammonia are as follows:
