Master Trainers are highly skilled trainers with a difference–they only use one kind of Pokémon and will only accept a battle involving that same Pokémon. For example, when battling the Pikachu Master Trainer, you can only use Pikachu against their Pikachu. Master Trainers only appear once you’ve become the Champion; you can identify them from their red clothes and an icon above their head, indicating what Pokémon they’re the master of.
Finding a Master Trainer is half the battle. These guys and gals–of which there are 153 in total–are found all across the Kanto region, waiting along numbered routes, inside buildings, dank caves and even in haunted towers. In fact, pretty much the only place they’re not found is inside Pokémon Gyms. To save you the hassle though, the next couple of pages of our guide contain the locations of all 153 Master Trainers.
When it comes to battling a Master Trainer, it will be a 1 vs 1 fight, with no items allowed and no experience points gained. The Pokémon used by the Master Trainers hover around Level 65 to 75. They also have numerous perfect IVs and a good amount of AVs invested in key stats. On top of that, they’ll often know moves that can quickly turn the tides in their favor.
Winning a fight will earn you that Pokémon’s specific Master Trainer title (eg. “Pikachu Master”). Losing just means some lost time and perhaps damaged pride. Additionally, after defeating 6 or more Master Trainers, you can challenge Pokémon Trainer Red at the Indigo Plateau. Furthermore, if you persevere and obtain all 153 Master Trainer titles, you can receive the “Grand Master” title from the GAME FREAK offices on the 3rd floor of the Celadon City Condominiums.
