Resident Evil 4 Remake

How to Complete the Church Key Puzzles in RE4 Remake

By
Matt Chard

At the start of Chapter 4 of Resident Evil 4 Remake, you’ll be tasked to get the key to the church where Ashley is being held captive. Unfortunately, to get the key, you’ll need to complete two puzzles which can be difficult to complete if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Read below to find out how to complete both of the puzzles to acquire the Church Key.

You’ll need to complete two puzzles for the Church Insignia Key.

Church Key Puzzle Locations

When beginning Chapter 4, you won’t have a boat due to the boss encounter on it in the previous chapter. You’ll need to progress the story until you have access to another boat. When you do, you’ll be tasked to “Investigate the two locations”. These locations are where you’ll find each puzzle, one in the Large Cave Shrine area to the southwest, and the other is in the Small Cave Shrine in the northeast. You can tackle these puzzles in any order.

(1 of 3) The Mural Cave Shrine is where you’ll get the information on the two key parts (heads).

Large Cave Shrine Puzzle (Apostate’s Head)

On your boat, follow the lake southwest, drive into the cave and you’ll find a boat dock. Exit the boat, and make your way to the far northeast. There are a lot of enemies here including dynamite-throwing villagers, so be careful making your way there. On the upper level (near the dynamite-throwing villager) there will be a locked door with a stone dais to the left of it. Interact with the dais, and you’ll need to input three symbols to open the door.

You can find the painted symbol in the surrounding area. These will be in a yellow paint.

You can find the symbols by looking around the area where you’ll find them painted on the surroundings with yellow paint. One is opposite the door, for example. The correct sequence for this puzzle can be found in the image below. Once the door is unlocked, interact with the statue to pick up the Apostate’s Head. Note: Once you pick up the head, you’ll be ambushed by a couple of villagers, one of which is a Plaga Guadana enemy.

Small Cave Shrine Puzzle (Blasphemer’s Head)

Back on the boat, head northeast across the lake, and you’ll see a castle in the background. As you approach it, you’ll find a cave with a torch outside indicating its location. Head through the cave, and you’ll almost immediately be able to dock. I like this place, it’s light, and small, and no annoying Plaga’s to attack me. (I may just stay here for the remainder of the game.)

Here is an example of the painted yellow symbol if you’re curious how we got the answer.

Anyway… The door will be straight in front of you, with the stone dais of symbols next to it. Once again, the symbols will be painted on the surrounding area, but you’re not here to search, are you? Input the symbols into the dais as shown in the image below, and eventually, the door will open. Interact with the statue to acquire the Blasphemer’s Head.

Completing the Puzzle

Head back to the Mural Cave in the southeast of the lake, and make your way back to the stone pedestal. Place both the Apostate’s Head, and the Blasphemer’s Head into the hands on either side, and the contraption will loosen its grip on the key, allowing you to pick it up.

(1 of 2) Place both the heads into the hands which will unlock the mechanism.
