The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition

How to Unlock the Falkreath Homestead Plot

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page offers a guide on how to unlock the Falkreath Homestead Plot that was introduced during the Hearthfire DLC.

The plot of land in Falkreath is woody and overlooks a large lake.

A Letter from the Jarl of Falkreath

Once you have the Hearthfire DLC you’ll randomly receive a letter from the Jarl of Falkreath asking for your help in clearing out some bandits in exchange for a plot of land and a potential position as Thane of Falkreath. You don’t need to be Thane to be able to buy the plot of land but you will need to do him a favor first.

So, head over to the Jarl’s Hall in Falkreath and talk to him about his letter. He will then ask you to kill the leader of the bandits at Knifepoint Ridge. Knifepoint Ridge is northwest of Falkreath, and is visible on the map by the tent icon.

The Jarl will ask you to clear out the bandit camp at Knifepoint Ridge for him.

Clearing Out Knifepoint Ridge

As you approach Knifepoint Ridge, you’ll want to keep your wits about you as you approach. There’s a lot of bandits on watch, so if you like to sneak and take people out stealthily, make sure to crouch early to avoid being spotted. Of course, if you’re the juggernaut type then you can just storm in and beat them up one by one. Just be aware that there are a fair few up on the walls with bows and arrows.

Once you’ve cleared the outside area of bandits, you’ll want to find the entrance into the abandoned mine to the south (still in the camp). Inside, you’ll want to head down to find the bandit leader at the end of the mine. The Leader will be a bit stronger than the other bandits since he’s a Bandit Chief so be aware of that if you’re a lower level or you’re using subpar weapons. If you are a bit weaker, try to take him out from afar with your bow and some poison potions so that he doesn’t have too much health when he reaches you since he will do a bunch of damage with his great axe.

(1 of 3) There are a lot of Bandits at Knifepoint Ridge.

Once the Bandit Chief is dead, you’ll want to report back to the Jarl in Falkreath. He’ll thank you for your services, give 750 gold and then tell you you can buy some land. Then, you can talk to his steward about buying the plot!

The steward, Nenya is found on the left side of the building, often near the enchanting table or sitting on the bench against the wall. You’ll have to first ask about buying a house before she then offers you a plot of land for 5,000 Gold instead.

Visiting Your Falkreath Home

Once you’ve bought the plot, you’ll be given a misc quest to go visit the land. It’s found north of Falkreath and is represented by a small town icon (same as Helgen, Riverwood, Rorikstead etc).

When you approach, you’ll be told to then head to the drafting table and carpenter’s work bench to begin the crafting! For information on the first building, head over to our guide on how to build the Small House.

Head over to the carpenter’s workbench to start building!
