Preparing for the Hunt

This quest is where things really start to get real. You may have been carried in previous quests, but the chances of that happening are far slimmer. For the love of all that’s holy, don’t come into this quest with the bare minimum, as you’ll be one-shot by Magnamalo’s attacks (we’ve seen this happen).

(1 of 2) The Tetranadon weapons are great since Magnamalo is weak to water.

The Tetranadon weapons are great since Magnamalo is weak to water. (left), Bring a Pitfall and/or Shock Trap, just in case. Plus Tranq Bombs/Ammo. (right)

For weapons, the Tetranadon weapons are ideal, since they target Magnamalo’s weakness to Water. As for armor, try to aim for as high Defense as you can–and don’t be shy to use your Armor Spheres (obtained from Optional Subquests) to upgrade your armor.

For good measure, bring plenty of Mega Potions and normal Potions. Also, this may be a good time to try out some traps–namely the Pitfall and Shock Traps. You can use these to capture Magnamalo when it’s weak, shortening the quest. Or use them to hinder its movements. Don’t forget to snack at the kitchen for the Dango HP and Stamina boost.

Magnamalo Location

Once you’ve started the quest, Magnamalo can be found in the following areas:

Magnamalo’s possible start locations.

Area Chance
11 60%
10 30%
13 10%

These are all relatively far from the main camp. However, they’re all fairly close to Sub-Camp 1, so hopefully you’ve unlocked it beforehand. If not, well, time to ride your Palamute all the way there! Note that Areas 11 and 13 are underground.

How to defeat Magnamalo

(1 of 2) Start by scouting Magnamalo and studying some of its attacks.

Start by scouting Magnamalo and studying some of its attacks. (left), The Tail Thrust is a hard-hitting attack you’ll want to avoid… (right)

Magnamalo is the flagship monster of Monster Hunter Rise–and like most of them, it’s a massive step up compared to monsters fought in previous quests.

If you’re new to Monster Hunter, this will probably be an extremely tricky fight, but do your best to hang in there. If you think you’ve been paired with more experienced hunters, there’s no shame in letting them do the heavy lifting.

Magnamalo is fast, despite its hulking size, and has a huge variety of attacks. To begin with, learn how to avoid the Tail Thrust. This is a move that Magnamalo likes to spam and it deals a lot of damage. However, it’s easy to read and, after it’s used, Magnamalo will be open for attack.

As you fight, it’s important to note the placement and color of the hellfire on Magnamalo’s body. The placement indicates which moves it can use. For instance, when its forearms have flames, it can rocket into the air and its arm pound attack will hit twice.

(1 of 3) Stay on your guard when Magnamalo’s body is cloaked with red hellfire.

Meanwhile, when Magnamalo’s hellfire is a deady shade of red, that means it’s enraged and even more dangerous than usual. At this stage, always be ready to run. Because Magnamalo can transition to its ultimate move at any time. Although it has a long wind-up time, you don’t want to be stuck fumbling about, trying to put your weapon away.

Also, some of Magnamalo’s attacks will inflict hellfireblight; when this happens, hellfire will appear around your body. As soon as you can, wiredash to get rid of the hellfire. Otherwise, if you’re hit by an attack in this state, the hellfire will explode, causing a lot of damage.

Otherwise, if Magnamalo is proving too much to handle on your own, consider using traps to slow it down. Just keep in mind that if you want to capture Magnamalo later, you don’t want to use the same trap too many times or Magnamalo will build up resistance to it.

(1 of 2) Use traps to slow down Magnamalo or, if it’s weak, capture it.

Use traps to slow down Magnamalo or, if it’s weak, capture it. (left), Generally, capturing Magnamalo is preferable, but if you want more Ghostprisms, you may wish to slay it. (right)

Lastly, Wyvern Riding can be very useful here. There’ll always be two other large monsters around, which you can lure to Magnamalo using a Stinkmink, for example. If a Royal Ludroth is around, prioritize riding that one because its attacks can inflict Waterblight on Magnamalo.
