How to Increase Renown in M&B II: Bannerlord

The most effective method for gaining renown is by winning battles. At first, you don’t need to think about taking on large armies which belong to powerful kingdoms. You can gain a lot of renown, while building your combat experience, by fighting numerous looter and bandit groups. There are hundreds of these groups which roam the entire map, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding them. You can also launch assaults on bandit hideouts, which tend to be located in mountainous or forested regions, and provide more renown if you opt to fight their leader alone.

While it’s certainly safer to fight these groups once you have a number of competent soldiers of your own, you should keep in mind that you won’t gain much renown if you only fight smaller groups. A great way to maximise your renown gain early in the game is by fighting grups of 10-20 looters or bandits on your own. This will provide you with more renown than would otherwise be gained if you fight them alongside other troops, while also removing the annoyance of having to chase down bandit groups, as they will hunt you down while you’re alone.

It is recommended that you join a kingdom as a mercenary or vassal as soon as possible. The first few clan tiers can be fairly easily attained by fighting on your own, but anything beyond tier 3 can become tedious. Joining a kingdom, particularly as a vassal, will allow you to participate in large battles against enemy lords and other powerful opponents. If you win these battles, even alongside other armies in the kingdom that you have pledged yourself to, you will earn much more renown and also have easier access to high quality loot after a battle.

To join a kingdom as a mercenary, all you need to do is find a lord or lady from that kingdom. You can do this by encountering them on the map by chance, or you can track their location using the encyclopedia (press [N] to open the encyclopedia). To join a kingdom as a vassal, you will need to speak with the leader of the kingdom. Speaking to any member of nobility will reveal the location of the leader. When you have found an official from the kingdom you want to join, choose the following dialogue options:

  • “There is something I’d like to discuss.”

  • “I would like to enter the service of (kingdom).” or “I would like to enter your service.”

  • “My sword is yours, for the right sum.” - Choose this option to join as a mercenary.

  • “My lord, I would pledge allegiance to you and be counted among your loyal followers.” - Choose this option to join as a vassal.

If you insist on going it alone, you will need to participate in tournaments and complete quests for various NPCs to gain renown. This will take you much longer than it would if you were to participate in large battles, but it is a viable method if you’re in no rush. You can find out where the nearest tournament is being held by speaking to any tournament master in any settlement which has a tournament arena. They will usually inform you of a tourmanet that is being held nearby, but you should still head there immediately to avoid missing it. Similarly, almost every settlement will have available quests, but each one will have a timer that can be tracked from the quest log.
