Be sure to plan your build before you begin investing in this perk tree. If you decide that you want to focus on one-handed axe damage, for example, you won’t be able to take advantage of sword or mace damage improvements from the mutually exclusive perks at specific levels. In addition, at certain levels you will need to decide whether you’ll focus on damage reduction with shields, or damage output with axes, swords, or maces. This perk tree is mostly useful for those who want to create a sturdy yet agile shield build, as the two-handed skill perks are more suited to improving damage output.

Note: Each of the perks listed under a specific level are mutually exclusive. If you invest in one at a particular level, you will never be able to invest in the other at that same level.

One-Handed Perks:

Skill Level 25:

  • Basher: Shield bashes now deal 50% more damage and stun your enemy for longer
  • Deflect: Blocks you make with one-handed weapons 50% stronger against crush throughs

Skill Level 50:

  • To Be Blunt: Increases your damage with axes and maces by 5%
  • Strong Arms: +2% swing speed

Skill Level 75:

  • Shield Bearer: Reduce the effect of wielding a shield on your combat movement speed
  • Cavalry: While mounted your one-handed weapon damage is increased by 5%

Skill Level 100:

  • Duelist: 20% more damage while wielding a one-handed weapon without a shield
  • Trainer: Hitpoints increased by 2

Skill Level 125:

  • Arrow Catcher: Larger shield protection area against ranged weapons on shields
  • Shield Wall: Your shield takes 20% less damage while blocking in the wrong direction

Skill Level 150:

  • Strength in Numbers: Increase your party limit by 15
  • Full Barracks: Reduces recruitment cost of infantry troops by 30%

Skill Level 175:

  • Stand United: Troops in your party start with +8 battle morale if you are outnumbered
  • Lead by Example: Troops in your party gain 5% more experience after every battle

Skill Level 200:

  • Steel Core Shields: Your shields take 10% less damage
  • Fleet of Foot: Increases your combat movement speed by 5%

Skill Level 225:

  • Deadly Purpose: Increased damage with one-handed weapons by 5%
  • Unwavering Defence: You gain +5 hitpoints

Skill Level 250:

  • Way of the Sword: Every skill point after 200 grants you 0.2% attack speed increase and 0.5% damage increase with one-handed weapons

Tip: You can level this skill by attacking with one-handed weapons on the battlefield and in tournaments. If you’re working toward using a shield build, it is recommended that you use one early on so that you can become accustomed to the feel of a one-handed weapon when used with a shield. You will also find it more forgiving if you are overwhelmed by troops in melee.
