This is one of the few perk trees which allow you to select every perk available, rather than choose between two mutually exclusive perks. As such it is fairly simple if you want to invest in crossbow combat. The emphasis here is on improving reloading speed and damage output. In additon, you can unlock using the crossbow on horseback fairly early on, at level 75. You can also boost the XP gain for your ranged troops, reduce their reload times, and reduce their recruitment cost. The final bonus can prove incredibly powerful if your aim is on point; with each crossbow kill, you will deplete enemy morale by 1 point.

Note: Each of the perks listed under a specific level are mutually exclusive. If you invest in one at a particular level, you will never be able to invest in the other at that same level.

Crossbow Perks:

Skill Level 25:

  • Fast Reload: +10% reload speed

Skill Level 50:

  • Hasty Reload: +15% reload speed

Skill Level 75:

  • Crossbow Cavalry: Reload crossbows on horseback

Skill Level 100:

  • Plain Hunter: +0.5 food in grassland

Skill Level 125:

  • Improved Aim: Accuracy increases to maximum 10% faster

Skill Level 150:

  • Maintenance: +7% damage with crossbows

Skill Level 175:

  • Recruiter: -20% recruitment cost for crossbow troops as a governor

Skill Level 200:

  • Renowned Marksman: +5% XP boost for ranged troops after a battle

Skill Level 225:

  • Volley Commander: +10% reload speed for all ranged troops

Skill Level 250:

  • Without Honor: +20% damage to hitting enemies from behind

Skill Level 275:

  • Bone Bolts: -1 enemy morale each time you kill someone with a crossbow

Tip: You can level the crossbow perk simply by using crossbows. However, if you're unable to purchase a crossbow early in the game, or unable to use one due to low skill, you can find one on the battlefield by knocking out an ally or enemy and picking up their crossbow.
