How to Unlock Mission 9-5-1

Hojo’s Monsters is a mission that is part of the Unknown Energy subcategory of missions that you can unlock as soon as Chapter 4. During that chapter, you will reach the Mako Reactor 5, where you can approach the one ladder off to the side to unlock Mission 8-4-1: Suspicious Mail 1. Doing this mission will unlock a string of missions, where you want to complete Mission 8-5-6: Treasure Info 6. Doing this will unlock the Great Cavern of Wonders category, where you will just continue through the missions until you finally reach Mission 9-5-1.

Note that the Great Cavern of Wonders category has some of the toughest missions in the game, so if you need any help with how to tackle things, visit the following pages:

How to Defeat Mako Ifrit

(1 of 3) Any accessory that absorbs fire is ideal in this battle

Mako Ifrit will be the final enemy during Mission 9-5-1, and despite what you may think, he’s really not any different than the normal "Ifrit" iconIfrit. The only problem is that Mako Ifrit is incredibly strong and if you’re not prepared, he can instantly wipe you out with his Hellfire attack. In fact, as soon as the battle starts, Mako Ifrit will likely rush right in and perform a melee attack, then go straight into using Hellfire. If you don’t have a high SPR stat, then you will likely be seeing damage upwards of 50,000+.

Of course, despite what you may think, Hellfire is actually fire-elemental, so it’s possible to equip something that nullifies or absorbs fire damage. This includes the "Flame Armlet" iconFlame Armlet, "Blaze Armlet" iconBlaze Armlet, "Escort Guard" iconEscort Guard, or the "Wizard Bracelet" iconWizard Bracelet. If you have access to the Sector 7 Shop, then you can simply purchase a Wizard Bracelet, although it is a pricey 80,000 Gil. Likewise, the Online Shop Duo will unlock along the way to this mission, which has a more reasonable Blaze Armlet for sale (10,000 gil). Just equipping this will completely negate both Hellfire and the "Explosive" iconExplosive Flame Shot attacks, leaving nothing but Mako Ifrit’s melee attacks for you to defend against.

(1 of 2) You will still need to worry about his melee attacks, though

You will still need to worry about his melee attacks, though (left), both of which are quite quick in their execution (right)

His kick attack comes out very fast, so try not to spend too much time in melee range, if you can help it. As for offense, you have "Costly Punch" iconCostly Punch, which is always an option and one of the best offensive Materia in the game. The ability to absorb fire will help with healing the damage taken from Costly Punch. Additionally, since Mako Ifrit has a lot of health, you can also use "Graviga" iconGraviga to help whittle it down. Despite being a fire summon, Mako Ifrit actually isn’t weak to ice, plus he will absorb fire. While using a "Phoenix Down" iconPhoenix Down is always a good thing, there really shouldn’t be any need for this fight, since you can absorb fire and you should have broken the HP Limit at this point, too.
