Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Grondal (Present)

By
Jarrod Garripoli

There’s a few things you can do in the present now that you’ve finished the past arc of Grondal. While you’re still inside of the Shrine of Mysteries, go to the blue door in the room with the statues and take the portal. You’ll appear in the Rainbow Cove, so go into either of the two areas leading to the east and check out the waters to bottle up some Prism Dew ; this will be needed later in the story, so make sure you get it.

Return to the Shrine and exit it, then Zoom on over to the Temple Palace, where you can sail to the present day island with Grondal to the east. The first thing you’ll notice is that the inn from the past is no longer there, so head on over and enter Grondal. The first thing you should do is go into the well that is just south of the church, as you can find a Mini Medal (#38) in one of the drawers there. You can find a Fur Hood in a drawer in the house in the northwest corner, as well as fight a Grimoire from one of the bookcases in the same house.

Now, go into the inn and check the drawer in the room with the martial artist-looking NPC for some Wayfarer’s Clothes , then go upstairs and check the cupboard for another Mini Medal (#39) . On the eastern side of town, there are a few houses, so enter the northern of the tiny ones and check the barrels for 13 gold coins . If you check the sign in the bottom right corner of the village, you will see that they sell some Yggdrasil Dew there. Unfortunately, you can only have one at a time and it will cost you 1,000 coins, but it does restore the party’s HP fully when used. Wait in line like a normal person and note that they can sometimes sell out before you get a chance to buy it.

There are even mimics for books in this game (left). It’s a good idea to purchase a Yggdrasil Dew (right).

To enter the big house in the northeast, you’ll have to go around to the back door, as the front one is locked. Once inside the house, go upstairs and look through all of the things you can, which will net you a Top Hat and 5 gold coins (northwest and northeast rooms). Now, go downstairs to the kitchen and take the stairs to get to the storeroom. Speak with the maid to make her move out of the way, then enter the room she was blocking. While none of the pots contain anything, you can open the two chests for some Scholar’s Specs and a Seed of Wisdom . The other room has a Red Fragment laying on the ground.

Return upstairs and speak with the maid, who’s in the room south of the kitchen, to receive 50 gold coins . Exit Grondal and go north to the Yggdrasil tree. There will be another Red Fragment on the ground in front of the tree. Also, if you don’t have a Yggdrasil Leaf, you can find one on the ground; returning here without any in your inventory will allow you to get one. There are two more residents you can get for The Haven, one inside of the big pot in Al-Balad and the other is inside of the inn in Grondal (the NPC in the right room).
