There are plenty of things to see in Sea of Stars, some of which might be a little confusing. One such thing is a locked door in Repine and upon examining it, the door says you need a Cypher. This isn’t something that you will get as part of the main story, as it’s completely optional. You will need to collect four Data Strips to do this, so this page will guide you on locating all four of the Data Strips, as well as how to make the Cypher.
The one door in Repine will require you to have a Cypher.
Where to Find the Data Strips for the Cypher in Sea of Stars¶
As mentioned above, you will find the door that requires the Cypher in Repine, which is a fairly late game area. However, it’s possible to find most of the Data Strips prior to finding the door, especially if you’re thorough in exploring. This is another instance of the game giving you items that you have no clue about, but the Data Strips are key items, so you can’t get rid of them.
Data Strip 1¶

The first Data Strip you can find is available as soon as you reach the main area with your ship. From the giant whirlpool, go north and you should see a small island, called the Speedball Network Station. Land there and go inside the building, then look to the left to spy the chest. Open it for the first Data Strip.
Data Strip 2¶

After going through the Derelict Factory dungeon, you will have access to the area with Repine on the world map. You will also have access to two other areas, the Cerulean Expanse and the Cerulean Reservoir, the latter of which is another fishing spot. Go to the fishing spot and jump in the water, then swim all the way to the far end, where you’ll find a chest with the Data Strip.

The third Data Strip will actually be in the town of Repine. From the main entrance of the town, go north and then hang a right when you reach the split in the path. Look for the stairs on the right side, but don’t go up them. There’s a path to the left of those stairs you can take, leading to the chest with the Data Strip. It’s not as hidden as some other paths, but hidden enough that you might miss it a few times.
Data Strip 4¶
The fourth, and final, Data Strip is a bit annoying, as it’s not located in the same region as the others. You will have to wait until you have access to the Fleshmancer’s Lair, which is the final dungeon of the main story. After the first room with the blocks, you will enter a second room that has you rolling around a giant eyeball with your Mistral Bracelet. Roll the first one onto the switch towards the entrance of the room, then roll the second eyeball onto the switch in the lower right corner.
The last Data Strip is in Fleshmancer’s Lair, in the room with the giant eyeballs.
This will allow you to go back to the first eyeball and break through the rocks in the upper right corner of the screen. Once you do this, you will have access to the chest there, which contains the final Data Strip.
Where to Find the Cypher in Sea of Stars¶
You finally have all four Data Strips and want to make your Cypher, right? Well, head back to Repine and enter the room with Cedric, at the top of the town. As soon as you enter, interact with the device on the desk on the left side of the room. After a tiny bit of dialog, you will finally have the Cypher. To find the door that requires it, enter the doorway with the purple arrow above it (there’s a Rainbow Conch in here).
The door will be on the right side of the room, so use the Cypher to open it. You will find two more chests in here, one of which contains a Cosmic Cape armor, and the other will be holding Question Pack #9.
