Botanical Horror Boss Guide - Sea of Stars

By
Jarrod Garripoli

While going through the Haunted Mansion, Headmaster Moraine will task you with defeating the Botanical Horror, while the rest of the team focuses on their own things. Once you reach the Gardens area, you will clear some brambles out of the way, then you will be able to finally confront the Botanical Horror.

The Botanical Horror is a fairly simple boss fought in the Haunted Mansion.

How to Beat the Botanical Horror

At first glance, the Botanical Horror looks like it will be a challenging boss fight. However, it’s not too bad and might be considered easy, if you can maintain control of the flowers. The biggest worries are definitely the Top Flowers, as they have a special move that hit more than one party member. Using attacks that hit all enemies can be a great thing here, especially once you cut the flowers down for the first time.

All Botanical Horror’s Attacks

Despite the number of targets in this battle, the Botanical Horror doesn’t really have many attacks.

  • Normal Attack: This will come from the two Bottom Flowers. They will burrow into the ground, and then pop up underneath one of your characters. The timed block is kind of hard to get, but it only does about 20 damage.

(1 of 3) The Bottom Flowers will just do this stabbing attack.

  • Quillshot: The special attack that will come from the Top Flowers, with it having five Locks. It will shoot two sets of thorns at random characters, with it dealing around 25-30 damage to that character. It should be easy enough to block, considering you’ve seen this type of attack before.

  • Revive Flowers: After defeating all of the flowers, the main body will be counting down an attack. This isn’t an actual attack, though, as it will just revive all of the flowers with half health.

Strategy for the Botanical Horror Boss

The Botanical Horror looks scarier than it is, but it has very few attacks and those attacks don’t hurt too much. First and foremost, the main body will never attack, so you don’t have to worry about it, outside of dealing damage to actually defeat it. Note that while the flowers are active and alive, the main body will not take any damage, so you will have to defeat all four of them before you can start hitting the main body.

(1 of 3) Attacks that can hit all enemies should be used quite often.

The Top Flowers will use Quillshot, which is probably the only thing that there is to worry about here in this fight. The Bottom Flowers will do nothing but a normal attack, which can be a little difficult to block correctly. However, it doesn’t really do a whole lot of damage, plus it only hits a single character. After downing all of the flowers, the main body will become susceptible. It doesn’t do any attacks, so you are free to just unload on it. Note that if you want to get a few extra attacks, don’t forget Serai has Disorient, which can delay the actions.

Once the main body’s countdown has finished, it will revive all of the flowers, but they will only have half health. This is when your attacks that hit all enemies are really useful, since something like X-Strike or Solar Rain might just down them all with a single move. That’s the entire fight, so just keep at it, and eventually, the Botanical Horror will go down.

(1 of 2) The bramble will be blocking this door until the Botanical Horror is defeated.

The bramble will be blocking this door until the Botanical Horror is defeated. (left), Inside will be a chest with Music Sheet #2. (right)

After the fight is over, feel free to use the campfire to rest, then save your game. The doorway to the left of the campfire that was blocked before is now open, so go inside to find a chest that contains Music Sheet #2. That’s it for here, so double back all the way to the foyer and approach/talk to Moraine to get whisked away to the Dweller of Woe boss battle.
