The Tyrant of Tennozu

By
Jarrod Garripoli

The Tyrant of Tennozu is a Subquest in Shin Megami Tensei V. Most Subquests will reward you with a large amount of experience, some Macca, and then you’ll receive an item of sorts. Most of the time, it’ll be a Talisman which allows you to have access to the different Magatsuhi skills in the game.

Demeter wants you to defeat the Tyrant, Belphegor

Recommended Level Location Rewards
38 Demeter; Konan 2nd Block inside a building 15000 Macca; Ability to fuse Belphegor

Defeat Belphegor for Demeter.

Where to start The Tyrant of Tennozu

You might have seen Demeter while exploring the Konan 2nd Block area. If not, head to the 2nd Block Leyline and head up the slanted building. You should see the little area with the Eligor and Berith, which also has some pedestrian bridges. Go up on the bridge and follow it east, around the side of the building, and follow that path until you see the opening in the building, which is where you find Demeter. She is planning on creating a green world, but there is a Tyrant in Tennozu that is a nuisance to this plan.

You can find Demeter inside a building in Konan 2nd Block

Where to find Belphegor for The Tyrant of Tennozu

Belphegor is the demon you need to kill for Demeter and he is located in the Tennozu area of Shinagawa. The easiest way to get to him is via the Tennozu Isle Leyline. Go down the hill and as you’re crossing the bridge, jump off of it to get on the highway below you. Head south, past the Magatsuhi orbs, and stop at the Andras you find just ahead. Look at the fence and you should notice some orbs behind it, so jump off of the car and over the fence, putting you on the path that leads to the top of the mountain with Belphegor. Simply speak to him to start the battle.

Recommended Party

Belphegor can be a challenging foe here, as he has both decent Magic and Strength stats, although he doesn’t really have any Physical-based skills. He knows both Ice and Dark skills, so you definitely don’t want weaknesses to either one of those. To make things a little more annoying, Belphegor has a good number of resistances, with him blocking both Ice and Dark, while resisting Physical and Electric. Thankfully he has weaknesses to both Fire and Light, while being neutral to Force, so those will be your three primary means of attacking here. If you do have something like a Naga Essence, then you can learn Puncture Punch from it, which pierces through his Physical resistance.

You will see pretty much any skills in Belphegor’s arsenal in normal play here, as he might be one of the first that doesn’t designate a specific one for his Magatsuhi attack. That can be a huge problem, as something like a normal Attack during that means he will score criticals and extend his turn to potentially fell you or one of your demons. Outside of the Magatsuhi thing, you can see Bufula (single-target Ice) and Mamudoon (party-wide Dark). With that second one, you don’t want anyone weak to Dark, or else they might be instakilled from it. Thoth is listed as a potential demon to bring, but he is weak to Dark normally. If you have a Yakshini Essence, then you can put Resist Dark on Thoth to negate that weakness, making him a huge help during the battle.

(1 of 2) Belphegor doesn’t use a set skill during his Magatsuhi charge

Belphegor doesn’t use a set skill during his Magatsuhi charge (left), meaning it’s possible that one of your party members might perish during it (right)

Other things that Belphegor might do are Concentrate, which makes his next Magic-based attack stronger, Matarunda (debuffs your attack) and Marin Karin. The good thing about Marin Karin is that it only has the chance to inflict Charm on a single ally, so you can easily cure it with Patra or an Amrita Soda. If you can’t get Resist Dark on Thoth, then you can substitute either Hariti or Baphomet for him, but you will need to put Agilao/Hamaon on them, depending on their skill potential. Parvati is mostly there for healing, although you could add something like Hamaon for her to deal damage when she isn’t needed to heal. Succubus nulls Ice, so she can be great for additional damage with Agilao.

Once you defeat Belphegor, he will disappear and you can report back to Demeter to get your rewards.
