Shin Megami Tensei V

Jouin Academy Dungeon

By
Jarrod Garripoli

This is a walkthrough for the Jouin Academy Dungeon of Shin Megami Tensei V, after it is invaded by demons. How to complete every objective.

The school will be acting like a little dungeon

Arriving at Jouin Academy, you will see that the place isn’t normal, as the Netherworld has started merging with the place. Your goal is to save any students in trouble and put a stop to Lahmu, once and for all. You will run into demons in the school, but it’s important to remember that you cannot recruit them at all, so there is no reason to even use the Talk command inside.

You can speak to a few NPCs outside, but there’s nothing else there (outside of the Leyline, so don’t forget about that), so go ahead and enter the school now. There will be some students you can talk with inside, but for now, go into the little area in the southeast corner to spot some Magatsuhi orbs. Upon picking them up, you will be ambushed by a Rakshasa and Incubus. The Rakshasa is weak to Ice, while resisting Light and Dark, and the Incubus is weak to Electric, while resisting Force. After the fight, head down the western hallway and you will eventually run into an Andras, who forces a fight with him and a Rakshasa. The Andra will be weak to both Electric and Light, and you’ve just fought a Rakshasa.

(1 of 2) You will find demons throughout the school

You will find demons throughout the school (left), and they will sometimes ambush you (right)

Just past the Andras will be some stairs, leading up to the second floor, where you will meet Hayataro, Yuzuru’s companion. Once that little scene is over, follow the hallway to come upon a Tsuchigumo. You’ll be forced into a fight with it, as well as an Oni. The Tsuchigumo is weak to Ice and resists Electric, while the Oni is weak to Electric/Light and resists Physical. You’ll come to another set of stairs past the Tsuchigumo, but ignore them for right now. At the next hallway, you will see a Jack Frost running away from a demon. Help him out, which will pit you in a forced battle against a Manananggal and an Incubus. The Manananggal is weak to Light, while being immune to Dark.

This Jack Frost will then become a nice addition to this little dungeon, as he will offer to fully heal your party, at no cost, whenever you speak with him. It’ll be a good idea to revisit him anytime you want to refill HP or MP. Head south from the Jack Frost and down the stairs at the end of the hallway, where you will find an Oni harassing a female student. Defeat the Oni and Rakshasa, then return to the Jack Frost. Continue past the Jack Frost, to the end of the hallway, then head north to find a Rakshasa, who will force another battle on you, with two Rakshasas and an Andras.

Take the stairs you just passed, right before the Rakshasa, and on the third floor, you will hear another voice. There will be another female student in the little dead end, but upon speaking to her, you see it was a trap and you’ll be forced to fight an Incubus and Andras. Double back to Jack Frost and climb the stairs right next to him, then head south on the third floor to another set of stairs. On the fourth floor, you will find an Aitvaras and Shiki-Ouji, with the former asking for a Life Stone for his friend. If you happen to give them one, then they will both leave. If not, then you will do battle with some demons.

(1 of 2) Rescuing the Jack Frost will have him fully heal you whenever you talk to him

Rescuing the Jack Frost will have him fully heal you whenever you talk to him (left), Give these demons a Life Stone and they will go away without a fight (right)

  • Say no - 2 Aitvaras and 2 Incubus
  • Refuse (last option) - 2 Aitvaras and a Shiki-Ouji

Aitvaras is weak to Ice, while the Shiki-Ouji is weak to Fire and Force. Double back to the stairs that you took to the third floor, right by that Jack Frost, which should have another set leading up to the fourth floor. When you reach it, go west to find an Incubus that asks for a Life Stone. Unlike the previous one, this one is a trap, so don’t hand one over. You will be fighting 2 Incubus and 2 Aitvaras. Backtrack to the stairs and go east this time, locating the Andras at the dead end. Approaching him will force you into three back-to-back battles, so make sure you’re ready. The first will be 2 Andras and a Rakshasa, the second against a Manananggal and an Incubus, and the third against 2 Aitvaras and a Shiki-Ouji.

You’re getting close to the end here, so head back to the third floor now and venture a little east to run into Ichiro, who is hiding. Choose whichever answers you want to the two questions, and continue east to be ambushed by 2 Shiki-Ouji and a Manananggal. Keep following the hallway after the battle, to one final set of stairs, going back up to the fourth floor. You’ll see a female student at the top, who mentions Sahori entering a nearby room, along with the bullies. Enter the room, watch the scene, and you will be back in the Netherworld, in the Shinagawa region now.
