Potions play a massive part in the Diablo franchise and with Diablo 4, Blizzard have changed things up a bit, read on to find out everything you need to know about the Alchemist.
You will need the aid of Potions and Elixirs if you wish to take on the hordes of hell in Diablo 4.
How to Unlock the Alchemist¶
The Alchemist has a lot of useful services for any character in Diablo 4, but first, you’ll need to actually unlock their services. This happens by progressing to Level 10, at which point you’ll get a Priority Quest objective that directs you to said Alchemist at the city of Kyovashad, the main hub for the Fractured Peaks.
You’ll be given an objective to perform your first Potion upgrade, enhancing the Weak Healing Vial to the Tiny Healing Vial. This will increase how much the Potion heals you for, a boon that you’ll want to make use of every time you’re able. This will also effectively unlock the Alchemist’s services for you to use on this character.
How to Upgrade Your Potion¶
Unlike in Diablo II, where you would purchase/obtain different Potions as drops and assign them to your hotbar, you have a single Potion that has a cooldown that can be upgraded at the Alchemist. This is an important task to keep on top of because as you increase in Level, the lower ranks of the Potion just won’t cut it anymore.
Before you can upgrade your Potion though, you’ll need to first reach the required Level, which you can see in the table below.
Potion | Level | Effect | Cost |
---|---|---|---|
Minor Healing Vial | 1 | Heals 17 Life Instantly and 35% Life over 3 seconds | |

How to Get Potion Charges¶
By default, your Potion vial has five charges available to it, and you’ll need to find resource drops around the world (or from bosses at certain HP thresholds) to replenish it. Still, five charges isn’t a great deal, especially as you’ll soon go up against hordes of demons as you progress in your adventure.
Thankfully, you can increase how many Max Charges you have available to you. This is done using the Renown system. As you reach certain Levels of Renown in each of the major regions, some of the rewards will contain an increase to your Potion Charges. Taking the Fractured Peaks as an example, you’ll obtain another charge once your Renown reaches Level 2.
