Diablo IV

Mount Quest Complete Guide Diablo IV

By
Nathan Garvin

Sanctuary is a big place, and in Diablo 4 you get to explore more of it than ever before. To help make traversing the hostile wilderness, you’ll get a horse… eventually, and this page will tell you how to acquire a mount and discuss how to control your steed.

(1 of 3) Seek out Donan during the main quest “A Master’s Touch” and afterwards he’ll pull some strings to get you a horse.

How to Complete the Mount Quest in Diablo 4

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that you’ll acquire your horse by progressing through the main questline. What might be a surprise is how long this takes. You won’t get a horse until you reach Act 4, specifically after the main quest "A Master's Touch" iconA Master’s Touch, where you’ll be tasked with talking to "Donan" iconDonan in the "Cathedral of Light" iconCathedral of Light in "Kyovashad" iconKyovashad. After your conversation, Donan will remark on your lack of hooves and pull some strings to get you a horse, just visit the Stablemaster in Kyovashad, Oskar, and he’ll hook you up.

Once you’ve obtained a horse for yourself, you’ll suddenly find the Stablemaster a far more useful vendor, allowing you to swap between horses you own, equip said horses with various bardings and selling you new mounts and barding. You can also obtain new mounts from specific events and score new barding as random drops.

(1 of 2) You can perform a signature dismount attack from horseback.

You can perform a signature dismount attack from horseback. (left), Be wary, however, as horses are more skittish than a battle-hardened adventurer, and will buck you and flee if exposed to too much danger. (right)

How to Ride Horses in Diablo 4

After acquiring a mount, you can summon it at any time by pressing DualSense-DPad-Right on the d-pad. Pressing the DualSense-DPad-Right button again will dismiss your mount, but keep in mind that after dismounting you’ll have to endure an 8-second cooldown before you can summon your steed again. If you want to dismount more dramatically, you can press the DualSense-ButtonSquare / Xbox-ButtonX button, which will cause you to launch an attack as you dismount. This has its own cooldown separate from the dismounting cooldown, and what sort of attack you’ll perform depends on your class and what skills you have access to.

While your horse is a relatively swift means of conveyance, it’s just a simple animal, not some hero prepared to take on undead, cannibals and outlaws, much less the legions of hell. If you bring your horse near these creatures, the beast will spook, filling up a meter on the bottom left of your screen. If it fills up completely, your horse will buck you, possibly leaving you in a bad situation. Your horse’s summon cooldown will also be significantly increased as compared to if you had just dismissed it normally. Fortunately you can spur your horse by pressing DualSense-R2 / Xbox-TriggerRight
to achieve a burst of speed, which also has the added benefit of knocking enemies out of your mount’s way, potentially preventing you from getting stuck near enemies and subsequently thrown off your horse. This ability has an 8-second cooldown, but you tend to have multiple charges you can accumulate at once.
