How to Unlock Sorcerer Enchantment Slots in Diablo 4

By
Nathan Garvin

Every class has unique features, the most obvious being their skill tree, the skills on which define and diversify each character’s playstyle. In addition, classes have unlockable features which allow for further customization. The Sorcerer’s unique class feature are Enchantment Slots, which allow them to further benefit from purchased skills in novel ways. This page will cover how to unlock Enchantment Slots in Diablo 4 and will include details on what each skill does when equipped to an Enchantment Slot.

How to Unlock Enchantment Slots in Diablo 4

To unlock Enchantment Slots you must first hit level 15, at which point the quest Sorcerer: Legacy of the Magi will begin. To get things started in earnest, however, you’ll need to trek to the southwestern corner of the Desolate Highlands region in the Fracture Peaks. Here you’ll find Mordarin, who is looking for a book called the “Forgotten Codex”, which will benefit you both. The deal is simple - you do all the work and wrest the Forgotten Codex from the talons of demons infesting a nearby dungeon, and he’ll teach you the tome’s contents.

Make your way east to find The "Lost Archives" iconLost Archives dungeon, into which this tome has been unceremoniously inserted. You don’t need to bother actually clearing the dungeon, but you will likely have to progress somewhat far inside - complete the first objective, “Slay the Demonic Vanguard” after which the next objective “Return the Mechanical Box to the Pedestal”. You can ignore the boxes if you wish and instead just clear out the demons while searching for a “Dust-Covered Chest”, wherein you’ll find the Forgotten Codex.

Once you have the Forgotten Codex, leave the dungeon and return to Mordarin, who will waste no time in putting the Forgotten Codex to use. Follow him into his shack and when he commands, engage in some menial brazier-lighting while Mordarin tries to guesstimate his way through a ritual. Klaatu, barada… coughs. Yeah, it goes about as well as you expect. Banish the demons that appear, after which talk to Mordarin, who sheepishly gives you the Forgotten Codex while he resolves to return to Kurast to find out where he erred.

Fortunately for us, his folly is our gain, as the Forgotten Codex unlocks our Enchantment Slots!

How Enchantment Slots Work in Diablo 4

To make use of your newly unlocked Enchantment Slot(s), go to your skill tree and press DualSense-L3 / Xbox-Stick-L-Button to go to the skill equipment menu. You’ll notice there are two slots below the skill icons, under the helpful “Enchantments” text. All you have to do is pick any skill you know (even if you only have access to said skill via gear, it still counts!) and equip it in one of your Enchantment Slots. One unlocks at Lv15, and the other at Lv30.

Each skill has a different, passive effect when equipped into an Enchantment Slot, as opposed to being use normally, as follows:

Skill Enchantment Effect
Spark Killing an enemy has a 10% chance to form a Crackling Energy.
Fire Bolt Direct damage from Skills applies up to an additional 23% Burning damage over 8 seconds.
Frost Bolt Direct damage from Skills applies up to 15% Chil.
"Arc Lash" iconArc Lash When you use a Cooldown, enemies around you are Stunned for 0.5 seconds.
Fireball When you kill an enemy, they explode in a Fireball for 50% of its damage.
Ice Shards Ice Shards automatically conjure and fly towards Frozen enemies.
Chain Lightning Chain Lightning forms automatically, after spending 100 Mana.
Charged Bolts When you Stun an enemy, there’s a 40% chance to release 3 Charged Bolts from them.
Incinerate Every 20 seconds, a serpent spawns and Incinerates enemies for 6 seconds.
Frozen Orb Whenever you cast a non-Basic Skill, you have a 20% chance to launch a Frozen Orb at a nearby enemy.
Flame Shield Flame Shield automatically activates when you take fatal damage. Can only happen once every 120 seconds.
Frost Nova Lucky Hit: You Conjuration Skills have a 30% chance to unleash a Frost Nova when hitting enemies.
Ice Armor Upon getting hit, you have a 5% chance to apply Ice Armor.
Teleport Evade is replaced with a short range Teleport on a 17.0 second cooldown.
Ice Blades For every 20 seconds in Cooldowns you spend, you spawn an Ice Blades on a random enemy.
Hydra After spending 300 Mana, a 5-headed Hydra spawns for 5 seconds.
Lightning Spear Absorbing Crackling Energy has a 10% chance to conjure a Lightning Spear.
Firewall Each time an enemy takes Burning damage, there’s a 5% chance to spawn 2 Firewalls underneath them for 3 seconds.
Blizzard Every 15 seconds, a Blizzard forms over you and follows you for 6 seconds.
Meteor Lucky Hit: 3% chance for a Meteor to fall on enemies.
"Ball Lightning" iconBall Lightning Lucky Hit: Critical Strikes have a 25% chance to spawn a static "Ball Lightning" iconBall Lightning.

There’s no commit charge for equipping a skill as an Enchantment (aside from the skill points required to unlock said skill, anyways), and you can have a skill equipped both as an active skill and in an Enchantment slot, so there’s absolutely no good reason not to experiment to see what works best, and to swap out equipped skills in your Enchantment Slots as new opportunities arise.
