Diablo IV

How to Find Sacred Items in Diablo 4

By
Nathan Garvin

Gear comes in varying tiers of quality, from weakest to strongest: common, magical, rare, legendary and unique. Not only can the rarity of items vary, but the stats vary as well - legendary items tend to have more stat bonuses than magical items, but what, exactly, those stats are, how high they range and whether they’re useful for a specific build is another matter entirely. In proper Diablo fashion, Diablo 4 is an RNG-fest, and when you unlock World Tier 3, another variable is added to the mix - Sacred items. This page will discuss what Sacred items are, how they differ from less hallowed equipment, and how to find Sacred items.

Sacred items tend to scale to your level better than mundane items, hence possessing higher stats.

What are Sacred Items in Diablo 4?

As you play through Diablo 4, one thing you’ll notice is that the level of your gear feels only a loose compulsion to match your own level. This becomes much more noticeable as you reach higher levels and approach the end of the main campaign, where you may find your level 50~ character equipped with an array of level 40~ items. As ignominious as it may be, one of the key features possessed by Sacred gear is that it simply scales to your level better, and a Sacred item that drops will likely be at or near your level, beyond level 50.

While this may not seem all that glamorous, a higher level means a higher stat range, including Armor, DPS and most other stats that can roll on gear. The power leap is so pronounced that a rare Sacred item at level 50 will likely have significantly more Armor/DPS than the level 40~ legendaries you likely completed the campaign with. Simply put, due to their higher level scaling (and hence, stats) Sacred items become the ideal equipment for characters who are above level 50.

Sacred items can be easily spotted by the (Sacred) text next to their name while they’re on the ground, and by the golden glow their icons have in your inventory screen. Gear of any quality can be Sacred.

How to Find Sacred Items in Diablo 4

Sacred items only spawn in World Tier 3 and later, so you must complete the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon and afterwards switch to Nightmare difficulty via the World Tier Statue. Once in World Tier 3, Sacred items can spawn from any source that yields loot - enemies, chests, even vendors and gambling can offer up Sacred items! That said, your best sources for Sacred items are from the chests in Helltide events or via gambling.

In the case of Helltide events, you’ll need to defeat enemies and loot objects to accumulate "Aberrant Cinder" iconAberrant Cinders, which you can spend on specific chests to get the item type represented by said chest - different item types cost different amounts of Aberrant Cinders, but you’re guaranteed to get a Sacred item, usually of rare or legendary quality.

Gambling works as normal, but you’ll have to look out for the golden halo on the items being offered up by the Purveyor of Curiosities to see what gambles have a chance to yield Sacred items. These are random, so you can’t count on a specific gambling category having a chance to yield Sacred items at any given time, but otherwise the costs are the same.

You can, of course, get Sacred items by clearing dungeons (normal Dungeons or [Nightmare Dungeons]), completing Events, or completing other activities that yield loot.
