Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

How to Defeat Gym Leader Maylene

By
Staci Miller

When you come to Veilstone City, you’ll be able to fight for the third badge. This requires going up against Gym Leader Maylene, who specializes in Fighting-types. Here’s how to defeat her.

(1 of 2) Maylene is the 3rd Gym Leader.

Maylene may specialize in Fighting-types, but she has two dual-type Pokémon.

"Meditite" IconMeditite comes out first and is a dual Psychic-type. Ghost-types, Flying-types, and Fairy-types are all great choices to use against Meditite, and most trainers should have a strong Flying-type by this point in the game.

Be cautious of Meditite’s Light Screen, which weakens your special moves. This can mess up your plans if you’re relying on special attackers (which is most Psychic and Fairy-types). Unlike usual, Light Screen will last 8 whopping turns due to Meditite’s Light Clay.

Maylene will send out "Machoke" IconMachoke next. Machoke is big on the offense, and will hit your Pokémon hard, so this is a good time to knock him out as quickly as possible. Keeping your Psychic or Flying-type at the forefront is a good idea here.

Be aware that Maylene has two Hyper Potions. It’s actually ideal for her to use these on Meditite, as then she has none left for her tougher Pokémon.

(1 of 2) Machoke is more straightforward since it’s pure Fighting.

Maylene’s final Pokémon is "Lucario" IconLucario, who is tough to beat. If you chose "Chimchar" IconChimchar as your starter, you should have a bit of an easier time since the Fire-type will help combat the Steel-type.

Lucario’s biggest and most irritating move for the trainer is Drain Punch. It’s an offensive move that will also give a generous amount of HP back to Lucario, and it can be tiring to keep going through this.

If you have a Psychic-type that knows Disable, try to use it on Lucario’s Drain Punch and you’ll have an easier time defeating him. Other things you can try is leading with an Intimidate Pokémon to drop Lucario’s Attack and applying a status condition, such as Paralyze.

After the Fight

Once you defeat Maylene, you’ll get the Cobble Badge which allows you to use Fly out of battle. You’ll also get her Stickers as well as multiple copies of TM 60, so you can teach your Pokémon Drain Punch.

After you’ve defeated her, head back into Veilstone City to meet up with Dawn/Lucas. It seems they need your help dealing with some Team Galactic bullies near the northern warehouse.
