Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

How to Beat Pastoria City Gym

By
Vincent Lau

This is a walkthrough for Pastoria City Gym in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP).

(1 of 2) Pastoria City Gym is water-themed.

Pastoria City Gym is water-themed. (left), Grass and Electric-types will be vital here. (right)

Pastoria City Gym is the 4th gym in the game, although it’s possible to complete it before tackling the 3rd gym. The gym itself is Water-themed and requires you to raise and lower the water levels to proceed, somewhat similar to the water dungeons in Zelda games (but more simple).

How to Reach the Gym Leader

From the entrance, go down the steps ahead and walk through the narrow path. Next, take a left, then follow the path down. Near the top of the stairs, there’s a red button–step on this. This will cause the water level to drop.

(1 of 2) Stepping on the red buttons…

Stepping on the red buttons… (left), Will lower the water to its lowest position. (right)

Go down the right-hand side stairs to the bottom level. Here, turn right and go through the narrow space above, where the wooden board is. Then proceed through the next narrow space towards the north-west. You’ll reach some steps leading back up.

Continue up the next set of stairs. On the right, there’s a green button, which you’ll want to step on. Doing so will cause the water level to rise back up. Now go back down the stairs, then go right and follow the path around.

(1 of 2) Meanwhile, the blue buttons…

Meanwhile, the blue buttons… (left), Will raise the water to its highest position. (right)

Towards the left, there are stairs leading up. Fight the Sailor (Damian) up here, then step on the nearby blue button. The water level will rise to its highest position. Walk along the narrow path leading south. You’ll be back near the south-west corner. Do not step on the red button!

Instead, go right and fight the Tuber (Jacky) if you didn’t do so earlier. Hop across the wooden board on the right. On the other side, you’ll have to fight another Tuber (Caitlyn). Moving on, head north. Up ahead, there’s a Fisherman facing the water. Past him is a green button–give it a good stomp.

(1 of 2) Finally, the green buttons…

Finally, the green buttons… (left), …Will return the water to its middle position. (right)

The water level will return to the middle elevation. Take the nearby stairs going down. Head all the way south to find a red button near the corner. Pushing this will lower the water again. With the water lowered, head back north. Proceed down the stairs leading up.

When you reach the bottom level, turn left. At the next corner, go south. Finally, go up the stairs to reach the north-west corner. Take out the Sailor (Samson) who’s guarding the path. Once you’re free, stand on the nearby blue button. This will return the water to its highest position.

Go right across the wooden board. From here, there’s a wooden board leading straight to the Gym Leader.
