Once you step foot into the Shadowlands in Act 2 and obtain the Moon Lantern via defeating Kar’niss, you’ll be presented with the choice of freeing the Pixie which is trapped inside the lantern or not. This page will detail the pros and cons of both options.

Where to Find the Moonlantern in Baldur’s Gate 3¶
Before you can get this choice in your game you’ll need to look for the 
Moonlantern first and this can be obtained by defeating Kar’niss who can be found roaming around the

Once you’ve got your hands on the Moon Lantern, inspect it and a cheeky little Pixie will ask you to free them. Here your choice could make your time in the Shadowlands a lot easier. A large majority of the player base recommend freeing the pixie as it means you can explore the area more freely and don’t have to keep everyone within the vicinity of the lantern. Below we’ll provide you with the outcomes of both freeing the Pixie or keeping it trapped.
What’s The Reward For Freeing The Pixie in BG3¶
If you choose to free the Pixie, then you’ll be rewarded with a pro and a con. The pro is that the Pixie will put a spell on your party which will give them all the freedom to roam around the Shadowlands without needing to worry about the curse in the area depleting their health and you won’t have to keep everyone close to the lantern. However, the downside to freeing the Pixie is that you’ll no longer be able to see wraiths or shadows during battles which will make things slightly trickier.
What’s The Reward For Keeping The Pixie Trapped in BG3¶

If you choose to keep the Pixie trapped in the lantern, then you’ll be able to see the wraiths or shadows during fights which makes battles easier for the less experienced players, but the downside is that you’ll have to keep everyone close to the lantern in order to stop the curse from damaging them. This will make exploring more tedious, as you wouldn’t be able to ungroup the party too quickly to explore random areas. Additionally, someone in the group will need to hold the lantern, so they’ll lose the option to carry a weapon.
