Baldur's Gate 3

Where to Find Corpse Flowers in BG3 - How to Make Thisobald's Purple Worm Poison

By
Nathan Garvin

There are numerous different types of potions, poisons, bombs and weapon coatings in Baldur’s Gate 3, and while many of them can be purchased from merchants, looted off slain enemies or pilfered from dungeons, some are unique concoctions that can only be created via the game’s largely unheralded alchemy system. Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyglummer (aka Thisbald’s purple worm poison) is one such concoction you can brew up if you’re wary and willing. This page will walk you through the process of creating Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyglummer in Baldur’s Gate 3, including information on finding the recipe for the poison itself, and the locations of the Purple Worm Gullets and the Corpse Flowers you’ll need.

(1 of 2) Outdrink Thisobald,

Where to Find Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyglummer Recipe

Probably the easiest of the tasks, finding Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyglummer Recipe requires you to visit The Waning Moon, which can be found northwest of the "Moonrise Towers" iconMoonrise Towers waypoint. Head inside and go downstairs to reach the bar, where, in typical Throm fashion, Thisobald pantomimes normalcy despite the monstrosity his vices have turned him into. You can pick a fight with this aberrant alcoholic, but it’s arguably easier to just outdrink Thisobald, which involves passing a few [Constitution] saves or [Sleight of Hand] checks mixed with some [Performance] checks. Check out the page How to Defeat Thisobald Thorm Without Fighting in BG3 for more details.

Once you vanquish Thisobald, grab the Worn Key off his putrescent corpse, then use it to open the metal door behind the bar, beyond which you’ll find Thisobald’s laboratory. By now you should be all too familiar with Thisobald’s penchant for consuming societally-acceptable forms of poison, this wasn’t the extent of his interest in the substance. Search a desk in the laboratory to find some Research Notes and you’ll discover the Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyblummer Recipe and learn of its two main ingredients: Purple Worm Gullets and Corpse Roses. If you pass an [Investigation 14] check you’ll be able to decipher a stained portion of the notes to learn the location of some Corpse Roses.

(1 of 3) Plunder a nearby chest to find another recipe, this time for Serpent Venom Toxin.

The easiest of the two ingredients to find, you can pick up three of these (the minimum required) in Thisobald’s laboratory. One can be found near the tables the Research Notes are on while another two are near two wooden basins west of the aforementioned table. These items will not be listed if you hold down “Alt”, so you’ll need to search for them manually, although they’re fairly large, hence, easy to find.

Corpse Roses aren’t as easy to find as Purple Worm Gullets, and while you can find the odd specimen out in the wild, there’s a cache of them mentioned in the Research Notes, which is probably the easiest way to get the three you’ll need to create Thisobald’s Purple Worm poison. To find this cache, you’ll need to find a ruined house west, southwest of the "House of Healing" iconHouse of Healing, northwest of The Waning Moon and northeast of the Road to Baldur’s Gate waypoint (see the provided map, above). You’ll need to pass a [Survival 21] check when you get close, then use a shovel to dig up the chest that contains the Corpse Roses you’re looking for - four of them in total.

(1 of 3) Create Salts of Corpse Rose,

How to Make Thisobald’s Purple Worm Poison in BG3

Now that you have three Purple Worm Gullets and three Corpse Roses, you can finally make Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyglummer, although this isn’t as straightforward as tossing the ingredients in a box and shaking things up. Here are the steps you’ll need to complete:

  • Open up the “Alchemy” tab in the inventory screen.
  • Select the “Salts” list, click on the “Corpse Rose” entry, then select “Extract”.
  • Select the “Suspensions” list, click on the “Purple Worm Slime” entry, then select “Extract”.
  • Select the “Coatings” list, click on the “Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyglummer” entry, then select “Craft Item”.

Voila, you now have a very rare poison that inflicts 1d6 damage per round ([Constitution 17] Save for half damage) and inflicts the Poisoned debuff if the victim fails a [Constitution 17] Save. This is applied to a weapon as a Bonus Action and lasts for ten turns. This will also yield the Special Iced Arsenic… Brew? Inspiration for characters with the Guild Artisan Background.

Now that you have a shiny new poison, check out the following pages for ideas on who to use it against:
