Baldur's Gate 3

Infernal Iron Locations in BG3

By
Matt Chard

In Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll get a companion who has an infernal engine inside her. This causes her to burn hot and overheat, weird sentence, I know. The companion is called Karlach, and after you progress her quest, The Hellion’s Heart, you’ll find out that she needs a rare material called an Infernal Iron. Read below to find out all the locations, what you can do with them, and where you can use the rare material.

Karlach will want you to speak to Dammon who is in the Elder Grove.

This list will show you where you can find all the Infernal Irons in the game.

Blighted Village Infernal Iron Location

The iron will be in a chest in the basement of the northern house in "Blighted Village" iconBlighted Village. This place is roaming with Goblins (and a few ogres) but you can convince them you’re no threat by performing the [Illithid] [Wisdom] check which requires you to overcome a measly 2 Wisdom check. Head north from the waypoint and the house you need to enter is next to the wagon on the path leading to the back gate. Once you’re in the house, head to the adjacent room where you’ll find a hole covered up by a calcified web. Either attack it with a weapon or burn it with a "Fire Bolt" iconFire Bolt and jump into the hole.

(1 of 2) Go into the northern house next to the wagon in the Blighted Village, burn away the webs, and drop into the hole.

Go into the northern house next to the wagon in the Blighted Village, burn away the webs, and drop into the hole. (left), You’ll land right next to the chest containing the Infernal Iron, simply jump up to the ledge, and pick the lock. (right)

You’ll get a screen transition to the basement, and you’ll land right next to the chest. To the north of you is a ledge, jump up to it and open the wooden chest on the left to get the infernal iron. Note: If you interact with the chests down here, you can find Highcliff’s Blueprints which will start the “"Finish the Masterwork Weapon" iconFinish the Masterwork Weapon” quest. You can get to this basement another way, which requires you to drop into the nearby well in the village, but it requires a few difficult battles to get the basement. The above method is the easiest and quickest way, but you will need to come this way at some point for the Zhentarim Hideout infernal iron later.

Shattered Sanctum Infernal Iron Location

The "Shattered Sanctum" iconShattered Sanctum is the inner complex of the "Goblin Camp" iconGoblin Camp which you’ll have to come to for the main story. The Goblin Camp can be found to the northwest of the Blighted Village at approximately the coordinates X:61 Y:365. Obviously, this place will be filled to the brim with Goblins, but you can use the [Illithid] [Wisdom] trick again to roam peacefully. When you’re inside the camp, proceed north, and you’ll find two large doors with an ogre standing guard next to it. Don’t worry about him, as he won’t bother you, and enter the doors to head into the Shattered Sanctum.

(1 of 2) Head to the gate behind Dror Ragzlin’s throne in the Shattered Sanctum and pick its lock.

Head to the gate behind Dror Ragzlin’s throne in the Shattered Sanctum and pick its lock. (left), This will lead to a treasure trove which includes an Infernal Iron. (right)

Inside the Sanctum, continue north, and you’ll need to use the [Illithid] [Wisdom] trick again to prove that you’re no threat to them, then proceed north/northwest until you find the room with the Tiefling controlling the Goblins who goes by Dror Ragzlin. Behind his throne is a locked gate stopping you from looting a huge pile of treasure. You can run up to the gate, sneak (C-Key), and picklock the door which requires you to overcome a DC 20 Dexterity check. Switch over to your highest DEX character, load them up with any bonuses you have, QUICK SAVE, and attempt to pick the lock. This may take you a few tries, even with a high-dex character, so be patient, and load the game up if you fail.

Once you’ve opened the door, interact with the treasure pile to obtain the infernal iron among other goodies. If for whatever reason you’re having trouble inside the room with Dror Ragzlin, you can bypass him by following the ceiling beams which can be reached further back. There are multiple treasure chests up there, and there is a ladder leading down near the locked gate in Dror Ragzlin’s room.

Zhentarim Hideout Infernal Iron Location

Zhentarim Hideout is at "Waukeen's Rest" iconWaukeen’s Rest, follow our Zhentarim Hideout in-depth walkthrough of the area to find exactly where it is, and what you can do there.

You can also enter the Well near the waypoint in Blighted Village, but you’ll need to use the elevator in the "Underdark" iconUnderdark which isn’t working right now. If you’re curious how you get there anyway, then jump in the well which will place you underground into a cave system chock-full of spiders and other nasties. Depending on your difficulty, and level, you may want to save this until later as there is a Spider Matriarch boss down here too, although you may be able to sneak your way through.

(1 of 2) The Zhentarim Hideout can be found at Waukeen’s Nest which is situated west of the Risen Road.

The Zhentarim Hideout can be found at Waukeen’s Nest which is situated west of the Risen Road. (left), In the cave system underneath Blighted Village is the Phase Spider Matriarch Boss. Underneath her is a large hole you can drop a hole to reach the Underdark providing you have something to soften the fall. (right)

Whatever way you deal with the spider boss, place Featherfall on ALL party members, then jump into the foreboding hole which leads to the Underdark. In the Underdark, head north, past the Minotaurs, disarm the three traps (need perception to find them), and climb up the rope wall. Continue north, and you’ll reach the elevator. As stated above, the elevator won’t be working right now as you need to activate it from Waukeen’s Rest, but there is a boatload of chests to plunder.

How to use Infernal Iron in BG3

(1 of 2) You can find Dammon in the northwest of the Elder Grove.

You can find Dammon in the northwest of the Elder Grove. (left), Dammon will upgrade Kharlach’s “engine”, but he won’t be able to repair it just yet. (right)

Once you’ve got your hands on some Infernal Iron, head back to the Emerald Grove and speak to the blacksmith Dammon with Karlach who is situated in the northwest of the grove at coordinates X:178 Y:561. Go through the dialogue, and eventually, he’ll upgrade her engine, but he won’t be able to repair it just yet, at least until you reach Baldur’s Gate.
