Baldur's Gate 3

How to Access the New Baldur’s Gate 3 Epilogue

By
Scott Peers

The original epilogue for Baldur’s Gate 3 felt like an abrupt end to an adventure that was otherwise an elaborate tale woven specifically for (and by) your character. In some ways, this is understandable, especially when you consider the complex web of choices that result in the particular narrative outcomes for each player. With that said, the new patch #5 for BG3 has finally given the opportunity for new players to experience a more extensive (and playable!) epilogue that takes place six months after the demise of the Elder Brain. On this page, we’ll show you exactly how to access the new epilogue if you’ve already completed the game, and we’ll briefly cover what you can expect from it.

In the new epilogue for BG3, Withers summons all your companions for you to catch up and say a last goodbye.

Can You Get the New Epilogue From an Old Save?

The first question that is likely to come to your mind if you’ve already played through the main campaign for Baldur’s Gate 3 is whether you’ll be able to access the new epilogue. The good news is that you can, but only if you’re willing to play from your latest save before you confront the Elder Brain. If you’re a frequent saver in games (which we highly recommend for anything as complex as BG3), you should hopefully have a save just before you fight the Elder Brain towards the end of the game.

If the above is true for you, you’ll be able to load that save and then go through the fight with the Elder Brain as quickly as possible. It may take some time but please spare a thought for all those people who didn’t save right before this point in the game. If your save was much earlier, you’ll need to play from that point, or you can just leave the new epilogue and experience it at the end of a different campaign playthrough instead.

What Happens in the New Epilogue for BG3?

If you’re not too bothered about experiencing the new epilogue from an old save, but you’re still curious about what happens in it, read on.

(1 of 2) You’ll get the chance to have intimate conversations with old friends in the new epilogue!

You’ll get the chance to have intimate conversations with old friends in the new epilogue! (left), You can wander the party camp for as long as you like, exploring everything and everyone there. (right)

The main purpose of the new epilogue is to provide a way for players to say their last goodbyes before the end of the game, but also to see what has happened to the main characters (and even some side characters!) in the last six months after the main events at Baldur’s Gate. In the original epilogue, it felt like all the agency for your character had been taken away as soon as you defeated the Elder Brain, and you were left to muse over just a few measly dialogue choices to give some semblance of closure for specific characters, but not all of them.

A Hint of Future DLC Content for Baldur’s Gate 3?

In the new epilogue, you’ll find yourself in a camp with all your surviving party members, and even some who have perished if they’re capable of returning in mysterious ways… (cough "Gale" iconGale cough). The gathering of your co-adventurers has been organized by Withers, and it’s partly a way for him to say thank you for everything you’ve done to keep the fate of the world out of the hands of the cruelest gods. For this, he is eternally grateful, but there’s also a hint that more adventures may yet await us in a not-so-subtle hint for potential DLC content. At least that’s what we want to believe!

Catch Up with Your Companions

Unlike the old epilogue, this one is partly playable. You’ll have the opportunity to move around the camp party and mingle with your old party members, regardless of how often they actually made it into your main party fighting force. So long as they survived the main events of the campaign, they will be there. You can spend as much time as you like questioning them about what they’ve been up to in the meantime, and the amount of dialogue choices is truly impressive when you consider how much relates specifically to the story of your characters. The BG3 developers themselves have stated that the epilogue brings together some of the most complex writing in the game.

Scratch, the Owlbear, and Tressym the Cat

For those wondering… yes, Scratch the doggo will be present in the camp, and if you saved the Owlbear in your adventures, they’ll be there too, but you may not recognize them at first! You can also look forward to meeting Gale’s beloved cat, Tressym, who you’ve undoubtedly heard much about if you spent more than five minutes speaking with Gale.

Read Letters from Side Characters

As if gaining access to thousands of lines of new dialogue with the main companions isn’t enough, you’ll also be able to read letters from side characters that you may have met in your journey. Expect updates from Art Cullagh, Arabella, Voss, Sebastian, Florrick, Mayrina, and more!

(1 of 2) Look for the Chest of Grateful Words to find a bunch of letters from old friends.

There’s plenty to see and do in this new epilogue. It finally offers a fitting tribute to the unique journey of your characters, and you can bet that it will be different for each player depending on the numerous choices made throughout a campaign. There’s even a unique, though horrifying, take on the epilogue for anyone who sacrificed themselves to become an Illithid, but we’ll leave the details of that for you to discover yourself.
