Baldur's Gate 3

Nightsong Walkthrough in BG3: Location, Puzzles, Choices & More

By
Craig Robinson

The Nightsong is an important quest chain that begins in Act 1, and while the trail of it goes cold in the "Underdark" iconUnderdark, the quest picks up again depending on your learning through Act 2. As you get towards the end of Act 2, you will stumble upon a very important place called the "Gauntlet of Shar" iconGauntlet of Shar, where your journey into the temple will reveal more clues about Ketheric Thorm, and the artifacts keeping him from death. As part of the process, you’ll learn more about the Nightsong and make some very important decisions. Here is everything you need to know about the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3, featuring Nightsong Location, Nightsong Puzzles, and the choices and rewards, and where things can go from there.

Nightsong Walkthrough in Baldur’s Gate 3

Here is how to complete the Nightsong Questline in Baldur’s Gate 3, including the Nightsong Location, Nightsong Puzzles, and more.

So, as a quick task recap, here is a chain of events you can learn about in the Nightsong from Act 1, but, don’t worry, as you can get this quest in Act 2 too, thanks to some important main story content in "Moonrise Towers" iconMoonrise Towers and Last Light Inn.

  1. Learn about the Nightsong in the "Shattered Sanctum" iconShattered Sanctum by speaking to the tortured man.
  2. Investigate the Selunite Temple in the Underdark. You will likely need to solve the moon puzzle to do this.
  3. Enter Act 2 and learn more about the Nightsong and the artifacts empowering Keseric Thorm.
  4. Go into Baltahzar’s chamber in Moonrise Tower and read his notes. You may need to enter the Baltahazar puzzle room to do this.
  5. Head to the Temple of Shar in the northern part of the map
  6. Complete the Gauntlet of Shar content. If you use "Shadowheart" iconShadowheart in your party, complete the tasks set for her.
  7. Speak to Balthazar, who is in the western wing of the Gauntlet’s upper floor.
  8. Enter the Shadowfell at the bottom of the Gauntlet of Shar.

From the 5th point onwards, this is where the main challenge of the Nightsong takes place. People doing this quest will need to operate mainly in the west and lower wings of the temple. Go into the temple, then speak to the zombies controlled by Balthazar. You may then fight some Shar guardians who appear. Follow the pathway to the left to find more guardians and more of Balth’s guards. Once those are handled, head into the room that Bath is in. You will likely be unable to speak to him until you get a Spear from the Library.

The Nightsong Puzzles in BG3

(1 of 2) You need to get the Umbral Gem from the Dark Justiciar Trials before you can find the Nightsong location in Baldur’s Gate 3.

You need to get the Umbral Gem from the Dark Justiciar Trials before you can find the Nightsong location in Baldur’s Gate 3. (left), To solve the final Nightsong Puzzle, loot this book from the bookcases around the Shar library after completing the Dark Justiciar Trials. (right)

To grab the Spear of Night, you need you will need to go down the elevator near the waypoint closest to Balthazar. This will bring you to two floors of trials for Shar. If you have Shadowheart in your party, you need to complete these trials before Shar grants appraisal for him to become a Dark Justiciar. So, have her in your party if you want to.

The Trials are:

  1. One is a stealth mission, you must be aware of traps, patrols, and locks to pick to complete the task. Read our in-depth Soft-Step Trial guide here.
  2. One is to follow a specific floating path, which is fairly straightforward.
  3. And the final one is where your four party members fight mirrors of themselves.

Now you need to go next door to the final trial and enter the Shar library. Defeat the creatures in here, and you can freely explore the Library. There is an object in the room at the rear of the library you need to place an item in to get to the loot you need to potentially kill the Nightsong with as part of the Shar trials. To access this, you need to get a book called Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger. This book is the item you need to place in the mechanism and open the treasure room of the library. The bookshelf we found it in is the northwest corner of the library, on the left bookcase closest to the wall. Be careful, as all Bookshelves have traps on them. So roll a perception check as you approach and disarm it. If you did, ensure your party members are far from it, and have someone take the meaty hit for interacting with the books.

Once that’s done, place the book in the mechanism near the Treasure Room. Be mindful of the traps, as they can blow up, create gripping tentacles that deal damage, or create hazardous fog. Once you avoid all the stuff, you can enter, and get the Spear of Night, along with some other armor as a reward too.

The Nightsong Location in Baldur’s Gate 3

Here is the final location of the Nighstong in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Now all that’s out of the way, you now need to get an Umbral Gem to power the elevator on the upper central part of the Gauntlet of Shar. You’ll have one for this, as the Dark Justiciar Trials award you with several. There is another one near the demons that Raphael warned you about to the east side of the Gauntlet if you want to do that content too. But for the purpose of the Nightsong quest, it isn’t necessary.

If you want to, you can now return to Balthazar and inform him about the Spear of Night and how you can go forward. If you want to, you can do this for the Absolute, or fight Baltahzar now as another piece of content. For the Nighstong quest, it doesn’t really matter, but, it does have some effects for the Kesaric Thorm questline stuff, which the Nightsong is heavily connected to. So, go and do that, decide what you want, and then proceed.

Once you have the gem, you can approach the console in the center of the Gauntlet of Shar, and then navigate the controls to take the elevator down. When you go down, with the Spear of Night in ideally Shadowheart’s hands, you can enter the Shadowfell. Follow the pathway to the bottom, and you’ll meet the Nightsong.

Should you Kill or Save the Nightsong?

Now the important question is if you should kill or save the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Now you’ve got the Spear in hand, you can now decide whether to kill or save the Nightstong. Both have pretty heavy story implications for Act 2 and Act 3, and do affect Shadowheart if you allow her to make the decision.

Nightsong Weapons and Armor Rewards

(1 of 2) If you kill the Nighstong, you get the Very Rare Dark Justiciar Chest piece for following Shar’s orders.

If you kill the Nighstong, you get the Very Rare Dark Justiciar Chest piece for following Shar’s orders. (left), If you save the Nighstong, you get your hands on the Moonlight Glaive. (right)

Regardless of the outcome, your characters will get the Nightsong Weapon reward, as alluded to this is the Spear of Night. This is a rare spear weapon, which is the weapon you need to kill Nightsong with. You can use this for all fighting purposes, if you want it.

The other reward is the Dark Justiciar Very Rare Chest Piece, which grants the usual stealth-themed medium armor, but with added shielding and bonuses for a built-in "Shield of Faith" iconShield of Faith spell on the armor.

If you save the Nighstong, you get the Moonlight Glaive, which adds a light source to your weapon. It also offers 1d10 +1 weapon damage, with added 1d4 radiant damage on top of it. it also has +2 to weapon enchantments.

This concludes the Nightsong questline in Baldur’s Gate 3. You now know how to find the Nightsong location, solve the Nighstong Puzzles and riddles, and then the questline’s choices and impact on the future of the game’s storyline.
