Baldur's Gate 3

Toll House BG3 Walkthrough: Toll Collector's Key, Chair Puzzle and Secret Door

By
Nathan Garvin

The Toll House is a location in Act 1 in Baldur’s Gate 3, you can find it west of the Emerald Grove, but you’ll have to go south, west, north and east to reach it, taking a circuitous route through (or at least near) the "Blighted Village" iconBlighted Village). This Toll House and its environs is where the quest Hunt the Devil takes place, but there’s also a fair amount to loot in the Toll House itself. This page will provide a walkthrough for the Toll House, including information about solving the puzzle under the Toll House and opening the secret door.

(1 of 4) One of the Paladins lurking about the Toll House, Cyrel, functions as a merchant.

Secret Treasure in the Toll House - How to Find the Toll Collector’s Key

As mentioned before, the Toll House mostly serves as the location where the quest Hunt the Devil takes place. The interior is occupied by some paladins of Tyr - Anders, Tryna and Cyrel, the last of which is also a merchant, although she sells little of interest. If you talk to Anders you can start the aforementioned quest Hunt the Devil, but these three are otherwise uninteresting.

When it comes to loot in the Toll House there are plenty of containers to loot, but the only thing particularly noteworthy is a Soul Coin just sitting on the balcony along the southern edge of the Toll House, just climb a ladder on the southern edge of the building to reach it and pick up the coin. Aside from the quest that takes place here, there’s a cellar where much more of interest can be found. You can reach this cellar by going through an Ornate Wood Hatch, located in the same room as Anders, but further progress will be impeded by a locked door. You cannot pick this lock and you cannot damage it unless you can deal more than 22 damage per attack - likely a laborious process, at this stage. There is a key, however - climb down two ladders along the southern edge of the Toll House and follow the road downhill. Hold down the “alt” key as you go and you should find the Toll Collector’s Key along the rocks. This will open the door, and frankly, it’s the simplest way to get past the door under the Toll House.

Failing that, there’s another way to get behind the door under the Toll House, but this takes some fairly specific circumstances. First, head around to the eastern end of the Toll House, where you can find a Burrow Hole [Perception 5], which is too small for you to enter, even if you’re a smaller race. This might seem like a case for "Find Familiar" iconFind Familiar, but this doesn’t seem to work. You can use "Mage Hand" iconMage Hand to get through the Burrow Hole and into the basement of the Toll House, but the hand can’t do a whole lot by itself. A more robust - yet demanding - solution is to take a small character (Halfling or Gnome) and cast Reduce on them, rendering them small enough to fit down the burrow. They still can’t get through the locked door, but they can loot everything on this side of the locked door, provided they can actually carry it all. There are also a lot of traps down here, so ideally you’ll shrink somebody with the ability to spot and disarm traps.

All in all it’s easier to just find the Toll Collector’s Key and go through the locked door, so that’ll be the approach we assume you take.

(1 of 3) East of the Toll House you’ll find a Burrow Hole - only the smallest characters (halflings who have been subjected to a Reduce spell, for example) can enter.

Explore the Toll House Basement - How to Solve the Chair Puzzle and Open the Secret Door

When you’re ready, descend down into the basement using the Ornate Wood Hatch to find yourself in a small room - general rule for this area, loot all the containers inside this place, as many contain ingots, potions and the odd bit of gold or gemstones. Also a surprising amount of poison. We’ll leave the minutiae up to you.

Use the Toll Collector’s Key and open the door to the east, but be wary, as there are vents on the ground. To identify them as traps you must pass a [Perception 15] check, but you don’t need to pass such a check to spot them, and once detected they can be avoided. Disarm [Sleight of Hand 10] the traps or avoid them, then go through a gate to the north to reach another room. More traps await in here, and once those have been dealt with you’ll spot two chairs to the west, and a suspicious section of wall. If you sit on a chair you’ll hear a click, letting you know something is working. Sit on both chairs and the wall to the west will lower, letting you reach the secure storage section of the basement.

(1 of 4) Sit (or place vases on) two chairs in the Toll House basement to unlock a secret door.

If you have a party of four, just sit two characters down and leave them there while the other two search the secure room. If you don’t (perhaps you sneaked down here with the Reduce spell?) you can put some nearby vases on the chairs - their weight is apparently sufficient to trigger the door. Once the wall is lowered, be sure to disarm three more traps (two vents and a linear trap [Perception 10], [Sleight of Hand 10]). Once those have been neutralized, you’re free to loot the secure room.

There are plenty of weapons lying around, many of them quite cumbersome, as well as some potions and some gold just lying around. The best of this loot is a "Greataxe +1" iconGreataxe +1 in a weapon rack on a table. Once again, the “alt” key is your friend. Loot a Gilded Chest to score some gold and a gem, a Traveler’s Chest contains two gems, and in a Wooden Chest you’ll find some Gloves of Heroism, which ironically are well-suited for Paladins.
