Before Arrival

GamerGuides is always glad to be your traveling companion!

The very first time you load up the game, you’ll be asked to set the in-game language. There are 9 different languages to choose from: English all the way to Traditional Chinese. For convenience, we’ll be choosing English, but you’re free to pick whichever suits your needs.

Next, the Alola region’s very own Professor Kukui will pop in to ask a few questions; what you input and select will determine your Pokémon trainer’s name and general appearance (including gender and skin color). These choices have little impact in terms of gameplay and story, although your gender affects what clothes you can wear.

Set in Stone :

You’ll be unable to change the in-game language nor your trainer’s name, gender and skin color when you’re in the middle of the game, so be sure to choose carefully. The only way to change these settings is by deleting your save file and starting anew (which you can do by holding Up, X and B during the title screen).

Afterwards, a thrilling cutscene will play. If this is your first time in Alola, it might be useful to have some popcorn at the ready. Or if you’re a returning visitor, it’s time to soak in the nostalgia–and also raise an eyebrow at the mysterious change towards the end.
